Chinese DVD player/American plasma HDTV compatibility question

Recommended Posts

I have recently purchased a Panasonic TC-P42X1 for our apartment.

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIERA-TC-P...a/dp/B001SE4YQS

Jingjing and I are still in China, and our Chinese DVD player is getting ready to kick the bucket. My question is this:

If I buy a DVD player in China, will it be compatible with the above mentioned TV?

Now, before everyone starts giving me referral links, I need to let you know that I've already read them all.

Almost all of the DVD players in china are PAL/NTSC, unlocked, and support an 110-220 electrical system.

Jingjing and I do not plan on bringing home any American movies from China, as most of them are pirated, however, Jingjing and I would like to bring to the States some legitimate Chinese programming such as the series 《武林外传》 as well as some others.

I'm assuming that we may have to purchase a converter for the plugin to access an American electrical outlet, but I may be wrong.

I realize that there are sites in the US that sell these, but since we're not going home until March 2nd, we may choose to purchase one now and take it with us.

This brings us another question:

If we bring a DVD player from China, I'm assuming we'll need to claim it when entering the States. Am I correct?

Has anyone brought their DVD player from China to the States? Can you guys recommend any brands for us to look at, (assuming there are no compatibility issues with our television). Also, what capabilities should we look for in a DVD player which best utilizes the capabilities of the above mentioned television?

Thanks for your feedback.

Kyle

I think it will probably work fine. PAL/NTSC are not relevant to the HD format. But you know, she could run the DVDs through a computer also. Personally, I'd wait until you arrive here. Blu-ray has gotten cheaper now with $80-100 players I'd get one of those for your nice new HDTV. You'll never want to go back to pirated highly compressed single layer DVD copies again!

I bet you just want to be able to watch your vast Chinese porn collection!!!

BTW in that last movie you sent me, the camera was pointed to low. Now we could see the Midget and the Sheep but 1/2 of your face was cut off.

I don't watch or make porn. Robert, you're going to get me into trouble. My wife is going to read this. :D goofball. Thank you, Michael, for your feedback and suggestions.

When are you guys coming back? After New Years?

Yup, Jingjing and I are getting ready to start our last "tour de China" in a few weeks. We're going to do some traveling - go up to Xiamen and visit some of her family. Jingjing's parents are going to stay with us for a few weeks during the CN New Year, and then we're USA bound. We have our tickets booked already for March 2nd.

I'm looking forward to heading to the States, in fact, we both are. I have many stories that I haven't shared because of where we are currently at. Perhaps after reaching Stateside, I'll post how Jingjing and I met.

Jingjing's excited to get some college under her belt when we reach the States. She has high aspirations of getting her nursing degree (this is what she studied in China through a specialized secondary program). Unfortunately, it won't transfer for her. Before that though, she'll likely have to get her GED. We're also hoping to meet more people from this site. Initially, we'll be in the Kansas City area, but, we're both willing to relocate if employment opportunities take us elsewhere.

We have plans of making two big trips after reaching stateside. Our first trip will be a east coast visit, probably heading from NC heading north to Niagra Falls. Jingjing has already been to Florida on a previous trip, so we might not head down there at that time, however, we'll likely go down there together at a later date. Our second big trip will be the west coast, but we haven't planned the details of that one yet. At this point, we're just focusing on getting set up and finding decent employment opportunities.

The problem with DVDs from somewhere else is that stupid region coding. :eyebrow: :sosad: :yay:

So, what you might want to do, instead of getting a DVD player in China, is get a region free DVD player, or get a second DVD player that you can region lock to China's region which I believe is 3.

Right, most department store DVD's are region 6 (China). We have bought a few that are region 3 (HK, Taiwan, etc). Of course the street vendors sell region 0, but we're not bringing home any of those. A friend got us a DVD player and it's waiting in America as well (with our TV), however, it doesn't seem to having a high success unlock rate. I've found the remote code needed to unlock it, but have read reviews that it often screws up the DVD player, rather than unlocking it. Looks like we're going to take the safe route and buy an unlocked one, and placing the one we have already in another room. Thanks Smitty.

If it's the two flat parallel prongs, they will fit directly into an American outlet. The DVI/HDMI and component connections are universal - you do not need to worry about conversion with these.

Your Chinese DVD player is most likely Region free, and can play any DVD. Others have brought back pirated DVD's - this is very unlikely to be an issue. They are looking for commmercial quantities, not copies for personal use.

I understand what you're saying Randy. I guess it comes down to personal comfort when deciding to bring home pirated material. Thank you so much, my friend, for giving me your feedback.

Tony, that's solid advice. As long as our current DVD player will hold out until we move to the States in March, we'll likely buy one Stateside. If it dies this week, Jingjing may urge me to get one before then.
