Randy W
Umm not sure what IUD stands for, unless you mean IUC, and if so then YIKES. The IUD stands for Intra-Uterine Device. These fell out of favor in the US after the Dalkon Sheild caused several abortions, but are still widely in use in China http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intrauterine_device Link to comment
SheLikesME?
Lets see there is this lump that I discovered and it has taken over a year to get the x-ray and sonic scan? After relentless explanations, articles and down right nagging and cancelled apointments I and the doctors gave up. We are finally going Wednesday at her request. Stubborn is tha main word here even though she swears all women have these and no big deal, so she REFUSED to do what I and the doctors told her she must do. After these tests then off to the specialist. Also after over a year we got wifes cavities filled and will be getting the wisdom teeth out of the way and things cleaned up with the gums and straitening. Probably gum sergury not necessary now with the better maintenance while shes been here. Since our 8 year old could not be so stubborn and stupid about health, I got her ears cleared up and all her teeth fixed and amazingly all the colds and flue and headaches went away that she lived with daily for a long time or at least a couple of years that I know of. Her baby teeth were rotting away and a lot of infection in there which caused the hearing loss and other problems. This is no way to grow up. You have to fix baby teeth too which goes against what the Chinese dentist told them. Momma agreed with all I did there. Sorry ladies from China, but you really should trust the hubby and go to the doctor and if you don't like what is said then go to 2 more until you get enough opinions and then do the right thing. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!! Yes we care about our spouse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Edited December 30, 2008 by SheLikesME? (see edit history) Link to comment

Batmaniac
Sort of an opposite story. When I met my girl online she was worried about some lumps which turned out to be benign cysts and have gone away with medication. I've known quite a few young girls with this in my life, and I actually wasn't super worried. She saw 3 doctors before I arrived. The first one was very gung ho about going ahead and performing a mastectomy on her. Idiot. I actually took her to the hospital for the cysts in her hometown with her mother and cousin (who also had them) when we first visited a year ago. Shocking experience for me but I later learned how common it actually was. No soap in the bathrooms, smoking sick people in line to talk to the doctor. When she did see the doctor she and her cousin got double mammograms and then discussed the results with an audience of 7 other women crowded into the little office awaiting their appointment. I'll have to tell the other hospital experience someday. Not quite up to it yet. Link to comment

You've got to remember that the drug companies prefer this method as they make lots of money on something that is taken daily compared to once every 10 years or so. Intrauterine deviceThe IUD is the world's most widely used method of reversible birth control, currently used by nearly 160 million women (just over two-thirds of whom are in China where it is the most widely used birth control method, surpassing sterilization). LaurenAmber
I checked with some people IUDs ar eno longer used because they caused too much trouble. IUC is Intre-uterine Contraceptive. The most recent common one is Mirena. Nevertheless it seems Chinese people on the whole neglect thier health ALOT. Either they just don't care, or the facilities are terrible. But that shouldn't stop you guys. Ask questions, make appointments FOR them, make them go. It's best for everyone Link to comment
Dennis143
we know our bodies and health very well, dont push ask. women is very sensitive on this.Jin, do you want to be involved in your husband's health? It is the same with your husband to be involved with yours. IMHO there is nothing to be sensitive about when it comes to your husband making sure that you get the best western healthcare. i agree but many women will be shy to talk this to you and also use chinese medicineFor mild ailments, we mostly use Chinese medicine in our home, Jin. For more serious things like my wife's Lupus or my high blood pressure, we rely on Western medicines mixed with Chinese. B) Link to comment
jhammer
Two weeks ago I took Mei to the doctor again for her tennis elbow. At least that's what she thought. While she was in the restroom I told the doctor my other concerns because I know darn well that she'd get mad if I discussed it in front of her. Nevertheless.......as it turns out my suspicions were correct. The IUD that was inserted after she had Jason was still there. It's "tag" line was missing (if it ever had one) hence she had surgery this past Tuesday to remove it. It looks like a piece if the spring my grandma had on her back door. Yep, it'd been there for 22 years. This was the first pelvic exam she'd had in as many years also. The exam revealed that the IUD had travelled as far as it could away from where it was placed. She kept refusing to go to the doctor for one. During the surgery the doctor did his job quite well and now things are lookin much better. I iitiated the medical visits because I love her and I'd kinda like to keep her for a while. My point for posting this information is simply this. All of us here at CFL love our wives very much. It's truen that there are some obvious cultural differences and some things are simply to private to discuss. However.....we aren't in Kansas anymore. So, if a man is a true and caring husband he will do whatever is needed to make sure his wife's health is maintained. Some men handle it better than others. No matter ladies because your husband has a right to know these things and he also has a duty to take care of you. I LOVE MY WIFE!Whoa. Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't thought about latent health issues. I better start searching for a doctor that speaks Mandarin now before I get too busy. Edited January 1, 2009 by jhammer (see edit history) Link to comment

Your message is very serious and so I decided to edit it slightly, and presented it as what a brother has said on CFL and emailed it to my SO in China. In case she did not find the translation, below the message, I added text from a website with a picture of an IUD lacking anatomical illustration. Today she emailed me back. I wont go into detail except that she is now in good health as far as we know and we will follow up once in the US. She was very touched that I was concerned for her and I think glad to have someone to confide in. Thank You !!! Link to comment

It's best for everyone An IUC is just an IUD that emits hormones or other chemicals that increase it's effectiveness. It is still an IUD. SOME IUDs caused problems because of their design but IUDs are still used in the US. Calling something an IUC is just a marketing device to avoid saying IUD since the term brings up negative connotations for many. The first IUDs were stones, which were placed into the uteri of camels to prevent them from getting pregnant on long caravans. Also, I'm sure the OP's wife didn't have the Democratic National Committee (DNC) messing around with her uterus. I would guess she had a D & C (Dilation & Curettage) performed. I agree with the sentiment that we should pay attention to their healthcare needs once they arrive and my experience is that gynecologic care is VERY different in China. Link to comment
warpedbored
My wife pays close attention to her health and takes vitamins religiously. In China you see very few obese people. People exercise more since they don't drive everywhere and have to climb multiple flights of stairs to their homes. Keeping this in mind I was very surprised to find out via a google search that the life expectancy in China is 4 years less than the USA. 73 years vs 77. Vascular disease and cancer have become the leading causes of death among Chinese adults, same as the USA. I suspect though that the data is very different between rural and urban in China and less so between urban and rural in the US. Link to comment
