Shenzhen K-1
It is a special challenge for most Chinese women to buy grown up looking clothes in your typical American department stores. We are fortunate that there are some Chinese "department" stores that cater exclusively to Chinese customers (sizes). But still, there's nothing like taking Leiqin or other Chinese friends to an American Mall and watching them go for the hunt. Sure, there are more plus size American women. And, most clothes on the American store's racks are plus sizes. However, I have yet to encounter any thin Asian woman walking around wearing what we would call "tents" or used to call Moo Moos because she could not find something size appropriate. Heck, I'd just like to know why all those department stores think that all the American men have a 32" waist and 34" leg! edit: Personally, I am at the age where I am beginning to wish they'd bring back the leisure suit. Try buying clothes for your two sons ages 11 and 12 in China!!! Also tried buying a shirt for myself at the "Wall" XL, yes right...... Link to comment

Well, if you'd practice inclusivity, I might consider it. Actually inclusivity doesn't make the cut at dictionary.com either. I, like Time magazine, love to make up "osity" words. However, here in our El Lay region I will admit that inclusivity has crept into the local patois ... imagine the nerve of those non-inclusive people who want school board meetings conducted in English of all things! We all look forward to to your leisure suit ... maybe if I look around I can find that necklace and medallion I had that looked so cool in 1968 if you'd like to borrow it. Link to comment

Tony_onrock
For those who live in the NY, NY area, try SYMS at Secaucaus (both the outlet and the half price store). My wife is petit and we shopped at SYMS quite often. They have some small sizes at a very good price. I found buying clothing in China to be more expensive than in the U.S. though. The other thing is that in China, almost all occassions are casual. Last time I put on tux for a hotel opening I became the laugh stock for all. But then an investment manager (local hire) came to a investor dinner function( mostly Europeans) wearing slacks was told to out and buy a suit. I guess it is the cultural difference in clothing. yuan fen
Jie can take an article of clothing here, doesn't matter what size, normaly bigger, take every thread out of it, take some measurements, do a few modifications with her scissors, and sew it all back together on her machine. Resulting in the perfect fit to her satisfaction clothing. Something about the quality of the thread, and the stitch in many clothes here that just turns her off. She is also picky when it comes to the quality of the fabric. She likes some of the styles here, but is always looking to see what modification she can do to make them better. Hip hugger jeans get cut even lower, and the tops get tighter. Link to comment
David&Wendy
My wife loves to shop at the Theory outlet store. Cheap place with good clothes in Illinois is Steve & Barry's!!!!!!! We got a Steve & Berry's sporting apparel store close to us. I've seen some cheap, low quality clothes sold while living in China. The S&B here in the West Oaks mall take the cake as they claim their clothes "normal" price was $25 and "on-sale" for $5.99. Those shirts felt like sandpaper and they used the lowest quality fabric for all the shirts they had in the store. I'd be happy to pay $25-50 for a good quality shirt. I'm really happy when I find good quality clothes on sale. I'm disgusted when I find a national sports apparel store selling junk. Link to comment
BillV 8-16-2004
We went shopping in GZ last April for my wife's clothes she doesn't care for the styles and the size here, it is extremely hard to find. We are heading back to GZ this April to buy her clothes she has already put an order in for next years spring/summer wear. My wife tells me her sister who weighs about 145 is considered overweight in China. She can't believe the over weight Americans we have here utilizing electric shopping carts filled with junk food and utilizing walkers to get around when all they need to do is lose some weight. SheLikesME?
In my whole life I have NEVER shoped the day after thanksgiving. I guess like selling off muscle cars, the right lady comes along and... I never did yard sells either. Well she was told at work all about the day after, SO. 5:AM we are up and out. Of course CompUSA had no more flat screens for her PC at that price. We went to JCPenny, Sears, and I forget. Fortunatly for me my wife is 5' 9". But when she gets in slim clothes there is a certain area that is too tight. Seems slim ladies in america are more on the Twiggy order. Ahh Hummm. Yard sales has kept the shoping to a min. We did get a couple of blankets, since heat in the house is not allowed until I am rich. Link to comment
marxdumpling
Hello, I am a chinese woman. 27. I am also a petite. I just wanna say I was very disappointed when I first went to Macy's in CT. Please don't feel offended. The clothes looked so dull, ugly and big, old fashioned, cheap materials... looked like a clearance warehouse...I looked around and nothing came in my eye. .. BUT the makeup, perfume section is great! I had to ask for help from my college foreign teacher in Canada because my husband never goes shopping himself. All his clothes are gifts coming from his family. Later I went to Kohl's bought 2 Levi's jeans which are considered kind of luxury in China!!! size 4. they fit comfortable but after I ripped off the tag it felt loose after half an hour...another disappointed experience... I am keeping them for pregnancy. Now I am kind of like American style.. I noticed people are very concerned about occasions. I used to dress up going to grocery store like going to a party. Because thats what I did every day going to work and out. And my husband thinks some of my clothes looks like kid's clothes.. Just a lot of Chinese women like to dress in a cute way ... Your right about shopping here in America and don¡¯t feel offended. My wife feels the same way. She also looks good in Levi¡¯s jeans because like most Chinese women, she is slim and not fat like most American women that you see. I think all Chinese women look cute too no matter what type of clothes they wear. Link to comment
