Gordon
Dang Ron, don't take offense. This is a discussion forum. If you can't take the discussion maybe you should not post stuff like this. I didn't see anybody trying to make you sound stupid. It was a good discussion starter. Everybody has their own take on things. Link to comment

david_dawei
Due to the dropping of CNY, it costs the inflation in domestic market. All my friends back in China are complaining that everything cost more money.I am hearing this from my wife as well. Same here! The wife and i just went shopping at a local chinese markethere in ohio and she told me we got much more food for the dollar than she would have in china. My wife too! Since we've gotten back to FL from Monterey Park, CA... all I hear is how expensive everything in FL is Link to comment
chilton747
My wife has told me that bananas went from .04 RMB to .08 RMB per 500g. I told her that here a pound of bananas is .42 USD. She said "I never eat." I know prices vary greatly from city to city in China perhaps more so than here in the US but I still think food is less epensive in China by a great margin. So David, Florida is more expensive than California??????? Food is actually more expensive in China, if you look at the amount of income people spend on food in China and the percentage of income spent on food in the U.S. Also the exchange rate change chart should really only show the rates starting when the government allowed it to float. The impact has been huge on the lives of a lot of people. (1). Imports are getting cheaper, but this does not benefit the poor in China. Imagine a poor farmer buy U.S. made xxx( oranges? or makeup?). On the other hand the raw materials that are imported from the US. such as grain etc. impacts the poor quite negatively. Prices get lower, they get poorer.(2). The poor lose more job opportunities in China. Garment factories and other low profit margin product lines are being closed down due to higher cost and even lower profit for exports. The poorest of the poor depends on these jobs. But, given the labor shortage that is becoming an increasing problem for many factories the shut downs help restructuring into higher wage jobs.(3). For me, personally I have the RMB going up. It means I earn less each day as I am paid in foreign currency but spend them in China. On the other hand though, a more valuable RMB helps in propelling the real estate prices even higher, a good thing for me. Link to comment

If you get your basic food items at the markets most people go to, food is practically free. We spend approximately $250 per month on food ultimately prepared at home for a family of three plus the housekeeper and we eat well. Eating out is expensive, though -- more so than back home. Part of this is due to the lack of a wide wariety of restaurants that prepare good Western food, I think. Still, in general, I can save a heck of a lot more here than I could at home on a comparable salary. Link to comment
David&Wendy
Anybody go to the shopping malls in China? At first I thought it was really cool to find a store or group or stores that sold LEE, Levis, and Wrangler jeans. Then I saw that a pair of Levis 501 that would cost about $20 bucks at Walmart had the price tag of 800 RMB. A pair of blue jeans of equal quality without the famous American brand cost 100-150 RMB. Both jeans had the label "manufactured in China." Link to comment

I have seen the Levis manufacturing plant in Meddillin, Columbia but I did not know they had one in China. I too have seen USA brand name things in China cost a lot more than here that's for sure. I buy mine at JC Penney online and have them sent to me here. The jeans you find for 150 RMB have nowhere near as much quality is Levi's though. Link to comment

Levi's sold in China are usually made here, too. I have bought Levi's for years and have never had a pair made in the US in the past 6 years or so. They are all made in Bangladesh, or Mexico or Colombia -- anyplace but the US. Anything with a US brand or actually imported costs a lot more in CHina than back home. It's cheaper usually to buy things online and have them shipped to China. Link to comment

The pocket liners are very quick to get holes in them. I guess the Chinese do not carry much change in their pockets???? Levis last me for years. Link to comment

I just Googled it and according to the web there are two cities in China that manufacture Levis jeans. Wuxi City and Guangzhou. Link to comment
