  1. There was an announcement last month, stating procedures have changed for military, giving them special "quick" procedures to get their spouse to the USA. I did print it out and when I find it will post it.
  2. A couple months ago I read online that the FBI started a policy of doing background checks on Americans in September or October of 2004. If I remember right their reasoning for this was to catch terrorists bringing other terrorists here. Hopefully this will also catch sex offenders.
  3. I attempted to contact the e-mail address: Su_fan@yahoo.com.cn it gets returned to me as mail delivery error - could not contact this address.????????
  4. My credit union uses Visa travelers checks. I had no problem cashing them at the Bank of China in Nanning. All they wanted was a photocopy of my passport.
  5. Just wondering why Nebraska can be so far behind and what the delay is. In November they posted they were working on August 9. December 6th posting stated they are still working on August 9th. Texas is the only one close and they are working on the end of August. Any where else our I-129F would have been decided on by now. If they are so far behind why aren't they sending to other centers that are so far ahead??????????????
  6. Just wondering. How many U.S. consulates are handling fiancee & marriage visa's per country?? China is a large country to only have one.
  7. I have been checking out translation programs for Simplified Chinese. I have seen recommendations of Kingsoft, they have an English computer version coming out soon for internet use (was supposed to be out in June??), basically the same program as they have for Chinese. It will run around $98. I am also checking into other programs. Anyone used Speed EICQ. It is a $179 program with online database connectivity for advanced translations. Up to 95% correct translation. EICQ has a basic program for internet use for $79, with about 80% correct translation. I want something that is fairly good, yet not too high priced. I'd go up to $200 for something good.
  8. Several friends told me to take Pepto-Bismol daily on the trip. The day I arrived in China I started taking Pepto-Bismol every morning. At first I brushed my teeth using the water, I used their ice. We ate at a lot of small restaurants where I was a little worried. All with no problem. When I left Nanning I threw away my Pepto-Bismol. I should have taken it on the plane on the way back but didn't. Close to Seattle I started feeling a bit quezzy. After a 19 hour flight I felt a little sick, but not too bad. The next morning I was sick, diahhrea and vomiting. I was down for 10 days. Thank God I didn't get sick in China. Later a friend told me I should have taken the Pepto-Bismol for a few more days and I should have been okay. Next time I will.
  9. I know Windows XP will do Chinese, but which Chinese setting do I use? My fiancee is from Nanning, China (south east) and she speaks Mandarin. What setting is it in XP, as there are several Chinese selections? Chinese (Hong Kong S.A.R) Chinese (Macau S.A.R) Chinese (PRC) Chinese (Singapore) Chinese (Taiwan Thanks!
  10. I don't want to and won't lie on the application. I will list my residence address, but I would like my mail sent to my P.O. Box here as I only get mail at that address, not my residence. I have some scum neighbors and it is an unlocked regular mailbox. I will call USCIS for info. Thanks.
  11. I am just about ready to file my I-129F. On the application it requires a street address. I do not get my mail at my physical address (I don't trust my neighbors). I have used a P.O. Box for 25 years and have no desire to change mailing addresses. Is it possible to have USCIS mail to a P.O. box or is this out of the question. I'm not sure how long I'll be living at this address, I may be moving across town as I am having difficulty with my neighbors. Thanks in advance.
  12. Check out China Air from the east coast. They have a flight from New York to Anchorage, Alaska to Taipai. Transfer to another plane at Taipai and off to Hong Kong. Great flight. Cost me $1175 rt in August (costly to fly then). But had to fly to Anchorage from Fairbanks - expensive to travel within state here. Then due to my schedule I had to fly back through Seattle - longer and more money that way. China Air was good, great food.
  13. I too have a great tax preparer. He takes every "legal" deduction there is for my business. Espeically after making some larger purchases the last couple years - new work van, etc. But it leaves me showing little income. So it puts me in a bind and may have to go the sponsor route or get a "real" job.
  14. No I havn't introduced myself and my sweetheart yet. I am busy here getting ready for my trip to China August 14th - engagement trip. There are quite a few Chinese in Fairbanks, Alaska and it gets cold here. They seem to handle it well, better than me (I've been here 24 years). I do plan to move to warmer climate - had planned to this fall, but my trip and engagement is priority one. May move to Santa Fe, NM. But may have to stay here while the Fiancees application is going through. The select comfort bed works. I never wake myself up from snoring any more. Have even run a tape recorder and it records next to nothing. Once you find the right setting for the bed, you sleep like a rock.
  15. I used to snore so loud friends said they took me camping to scare the bears away (I'm from Alaska). My friends would sleep several feet from me. I used to wake myself up with my snoring. I also only slept 4 1/2 to 5 hours a night. During the night I would wake up several times. All this changed when I bought my latest mattress, a "Sleep Number" bed - no I don't work for them. The first night on it I slept 8 hours straight through. Now I average around 7 hours. I hardly ever wake up at night any more. I seldom turn in bed and often find myself in the same position as when I went to bed and the sheets hardly moved. Each side has its own control to set your "sleep number" to the correct comfort zone. The best mattresss I've ever bought. Only problem now is I used to love to read in bed, now I can't hardly stay awake - I fall asleep within minutes of laying down. Also great for back problems.
  16. What translator program are you using? I have looked at several. Havne't decided yet. KingSoft is coming out with a version that will work directly in Outlook - in June - called TranStar 6.0 (similar to TranslatorExpress).
  17. I am trying to locate sizing information and have had no luck on the internet. My girlfriend stated her pants length was 2.95 ruler. What in the world is a ruler? I could find no reference to this. Also what does a 38M correspond to in U.S. size? I think a medium, but not sure. Thanks!
  18. I keep noticing people mentioning the FBI background check for the K-1 Visa. What is this all about? Who do they do it on? What are they looking for? What happens if they have something on the person? How does this affect an application? This is new to me so thought I'd check on it. Thanks.
  19. I am wondering what setting to set the language on for setup in Windows XP. Under Regional and Language settings I have 5 choices in advanced settings for Chinese: 1. Macau S.A.R.; 2. Hong Kong S.A.R.; 3. PRC, 4. Singapore; 5. Taiwan. My girlfriend is from Nanning, China. Which do I use?? Thanks.
  20. I tried Babelfish for tanslating. It was so hard to read and decipher it gave her a headache and she gave up. Am I doing something wrong? She speaks Mandarin. Babelfish has two settings - simplified and traditional. Which do I use? I've been using traditional. Thanks
  21. Thanks they just came out with a new PowerWord program. I will order it today. They also make a program called TranlationExpress for instand online communication. Can I get by with PowerWord for the time being as we are not chatting online, just sending message? Does PowerWord translate letters easily? Any idea on where to get an electronic translator in China? Maybe I'll have my girlfriend pick one up. Thanks for the help.
  22. I am traveling to Nanning in the next couple of months to visit my girlfriend and I want to be able to communicate with her as she only speaks Mandarin. Can anyone recommend a good translation machine. I have seen ads for small pocket book sized computers that supposedly translate back and forth, some with voice. One website recommended one and I lost that site. I am trying to learn Mandarin but I dont' think I'll have enough time before I go to grasp the language. What is a good computer program to learn Mandarin. Also, can you recommend a good program for the computer to translate e-mails to me or her? The on-line ones are TERRIBLE - she couldn't read them and gave up. I don't mind spending the money if the program does it well. It is costing her lots of money to hire a translator at the internet cafe to translate our messages. Thanks
