  1. Thanks everybody. I'm going to read up on all the forum posts first, should hopefully cover most bases. Keep you posted!
  2. Hi Everyone, I'm trying to find a book that can highlight the cultural differences when pertaining to marriage. I'm American, my wife Chinese, and we moved back to the US in March. Can anyone recommend a book that speaks to the unique cultural challenges for a new marriage? Any input much appreciated!
  3. Thanks again everyone for answering so quickly, very helpful indeed. The next question pertains to my wife's legal name. She now has her SSN in hand with her Chinese name, but would now like to add my family name. My question: can I try to make changes to the current petition for the green card first, or should I try changing the name through the SSN at the local office? I'm worried about changing any of the current system now running on the green card arrival, but do need to eventually change the name. Much appreciated!
  4. Thanks guys! Happy addendum: received the social security card this afternoon, so all's well that ends well! Thanks again for the quick replies!
  5. Bit of an update...just came back from the SS office. Not sure if it's because we were at a smaller office, but the people there were convinced that the I-551 should be a green card that is mailed to us. As my wife's visa is expiring on 15 March, the system would not allow us to send through until we have the I-551 in hand. So my new question: do we have to wait for this document to be mailed to us, or should I be calling INS directly about this? I can confirm we've received nothing in the mail thus far, and we're close enough to the visa expiration date to be a little nervous. I'm hoping this is just a little confusion on the SS office part until we receive the documents, but would like to be sure. Thanks!
  6. Another question for everyone: my wife and I have finally arrived in the US. Do we need any special documentation besides my wife's passport to go to the local social security office, or do we need to wait for the green card to arrive first?
  7. Here's an interesting one: preparing for our jump to the US, and my wife told me that some China based airlines give special preferences to new immigrants (extra free checked luggage). I was wondering if anyone has heard of this phenomenon, and if any US-based airlines do this (Delta, United, etc). Thanks! Sammy
  8. Thanks everyone, this info is very useful! We have the CR-1 on the wife's passport, so I'll definitely keep an eye out during the interview. Will I be able to see immediately if the POE didn't code correctly, or will we only be able to tell when we get the card in the mail?
  9. Hi Everyone, This is a related question: my wife and I are preparing for our arrival in the US after getting the IR-1 visa processed. We will arrive after our two year anniversary. My question is this: is there any particular point of entry that is used to new immigrants arriving? I remember one time arriving in Chicago and having my then-girlfriend almost having an argument with the immigration official, but we had no issues whatsoever flying through Toronto. I ask because I don't know how unusual our situation will be, when our documentation is enough for the 10 year green card. Probably overthinking this, but would like to be sure. Any feedback much appreciated! Thanks, Sammy
  10. Thanks for all the feedback on this guys! We had our interview in Guangzhou last week (passed!), and made sure to have the 260 filled out as well just in case. They did ask for this at the interview, even though we had the 230 already submitted and accepted. Side note for future reference: we noted at the last moment that the I-864 that we had submitted was an expired version. Luckily we updated and had the new one ready for the interview, so no worries there either.
  11. I will add to this, since your employer is in the states, and your working in China is for the US based employer, this is strong domicile evidence that working overseas was a temporary condition, thus no loss of domicile, also an employer letter tends to show will be employed after sponsoring an immigrant. The usual income evidence attached to an I-864 are: Tax Transcripts or Returns (1040+W2s+1099s) (Shows past income history)Recent pay stubs or bank statements showing deposits, (Shows current income)Employer letter (Shows future income stability)Lastly, since your income will continue after returning to the states and will be of a sufficient level, then no joint sponsor should be required. Ok, got it. Looks like we're set then. Thanks for the feedback!
  12. HI Randy, I already have this signed by my employer, explaining my salary for the year to date. So I should revise the document to state that I'll be returning to my job in the US, then. Ok, thanks for the input! Sammy
  13. Hi Randy, Yes, I transferred into China with the same company, and under the same salary scale (well above poverty level). I guess the question is what kind of document could I submit to explain this, since I won't be present? I can write a statement on company letterhead, business card, even my driver's license is at my old US-based address. Thanks! Sammy
  14. Along these lines, if I am currently in China but planning on transferring back to my US job, would I need to write a letter explaining the situation? Well above the poverty level that might necessitate a joint sponsor otherwise. Thanks!
  15. Hello, Here's a strange question for everyone: first, my wife and I are scheduled to interview in Guangzhou in October. I've just finished filing for my 2012 tax returns and applied ITIN at the same time for my wife to assign the wife a social security number (required for joint tax returns, apparently). Now looking over all our documents in preparation for the interview, it shows that I checked "no" under part 2 of the original DS-230 application (part 2, 43a), requesting to be assigned a social security number. Should I revise this document and submit again before the interview, or wait for the interview to explain the situation re: 2012 tax returns? Any feedback much appreciated! Sammy
  16. Here's a new question: we're confirmed for our interview in GZ for October. However, because of our filing of the ITIN for my wife to get her social security number, I will not receive any confirmation from the IRS for transcripts or the like. All I have is my customer copy of the 2012 tax returns and the ITIN that I submitted on behalf of my wife. Will this be sufficient for the interview, or should we reschedule for when we have all the documentation in hand? Thanks in advance for any advice. Sammy
  17. Hi Everybody, Thanks for all the info. Still thinking about this, have some extenuating family circumstances that might have me jump back Stateside rather sooner than later. It does seem to make sense from both a financial and paperwork standpoint to stay the extra three months. Thanks again for the feedback.
  18. Hi Guys, I'd like to revisit this subject, as we're getting close now to the invitation for interview. To catch up a bit: I ended up suspending the process until we jumped back to the US for a visit (thanks for the feedback!). Now continuing, anticipating the interview invitation in the next month or so. Still CR-1. Our two year anniversary will be Feb 24. The question is this: we're considering leaving this coming November. How much would we really save by staying in Beijing through February before leaving for the US? Would it be worth the bother to stay the extra months to ensure easy transition to the 10 year green card? DS-230 already paid. Thanks in advance!
  19. I just finished getting my wife's Chinese passport notarized by the US Consulate in Beijing last week for the ITIN, and will be submitting my tax returns for 2012 in the next week or so (yes, extended until Oct 2013). I'll update everyone on the outcome. Wish us luck!
  20. Thank you so much for this! Already set the appointment for next week. Related question: since I'm still working on my 2012 tax returns, will this impact directly on our upcoming visa interview? My wife is getting conflicting information on her QQ group site. Thanks again for the help!
  21. Forgot to mention: here's a link to the interim rules being enacted for 2012. http://www.irs.gov/uac/2012-ITIN-Review-Frequently-Asked-Questions-1
