  1. Nothing you say can prepare her for reality. Remember how different China was to you? Reverse it and you will see where she is going to be coming from. I mentioned times too numerous to count how boring my little town (pop 1600) is compared to GUZ (pop 10+ million). She is feeling that in full effect, at times, but I do everything I can to help her adjust. She has some Chinese TV, plenty of English to study (incl citizenship and driving manuals, besides pimsleur and rosetta and others), and we spend a fair amount of time together. Atlanta should still avail you and she to a Chinese community she can meet friends in. This is the hardest for my wife, who is the only Chinese adult in town (3 adopted Chinese girls are here too, but they are >3 y.o.), and one of 20 (according to census) in my whole county. When double nines comes in a month or so, we'll be heading to Spokane and joining their moon festival to meet people and hopefully get some local friends for my wife. She calls family and friends often, and it staves off the big homesickness (only had one bad night thus far). Plan on Onesuite, or some version of what you use now, at the same levels you use it now. Be there for her, and make the house as neat and tidy as possible. Take some time off if you can, to be there with her for the first few days. If you don't have to work weekends (or whatever days you get off), plan events with her, mixed, probably, with some sort of honey-do list for arranging and rearranging the house. I'm a month in (as of 7/1), and its been a very interesting month. Work has suffered a bit, but I think she's worth it. Good luck, and relax.
  2. Why can't we act as interpreter? I can translate about anything into lao gong/lao po hua (aka chinglish) for my wife, if she shys up (more common) or does not understand the question (sometimes happens)...
  3. http://www.wcetv.com/ Worth a look. Out of SoCal from what I can tell.
  4. Congratulations izus! I truly wish you two a long and happy life together. When is the big day?
  5. CONGRATULATIONS!!! I am thrilled for ya Mike!!!
  6. The solution is a Tempurpedic. They start out firm, but conform to your body. So they soften up for my 6' 230# frame, but my wife at 5'3" 108# its almost flat and very firm. She doesn't sink into it too much. She likes it very much. "not too soft" Also she seems not to snore when she is on it, which is priceless to me Edit - They must not be ill-boding! Mine is new and bodes well. The old one is also a tempurpedic, and goes in the paper next week if I have time, but I won't mention it is ill-boding.
  7. And no, I won't buy one from China. My wife did that, and it took a while for the smell of melted plastic to get out of the house!!! She has a couple devices that are Chinese 220V tri-plug and she wants to use them here. One device is some sort of therapeutic infrared gizmo that I was at first skeptical of, but it does work. At least for the 20 minutes before the converter she bought melted. My first clue it might be 'jia de' is when it had a hand written sticker over the top of the electronic sticker that had 110V and 220V opposite what was under the sticker. I think someone reversed it in house, and thought it would work. Scary. Seeing this, I kept a good eye on it, so it didn't melt too much before I unplugged it. My wife was very angry. She wanted to hit the vendor over the head with it So needless to say I need another, and if anyone knows where I can get one, I would surely appreciate it!!!
  8. Just have her do what my wife did to calm her nerves, she went shopping all day ! Congratulations 228653[/snapback] LOLOLOL My wife did that too. The first of her 'purchases' caught fire today. Luckily I caught the smell before it simmered for too long. It was a converter from 220V to 110V. My first clue it might not be 'genuine' was because it had a hand written sticker with the voltage, opposite of the voltage listed on the actual device, under the sticker. So I had a sharp eye on it. It lasted 20 minutes, which is 10 longer than I expected, but Laopo was pretty angry.
  9. I am very enthused about the flurry of activity. RFE's are something to celebrate because it means progress. Progress is good. Very good. CONGRATS TO ALL WHO ARE MOVING AHEAD! Let's pray and/or wish well those who the gov't is keeping waiting too.
  10. I added my wife to my insurance when I returned from China after our marriage. No problems.
  11. I think that anyone who gives labels to other people should be labelled 'labellers."
  12. I think he took the words out of all of our mouths. Well said DON! No wonder Trigg wants to bear his children...
  13. My ill-boding mattress went into the garage on Monday. I have 5 large boxes of stuff to go to the Goodwill. I had a housekeeper come for 7 hours cleaning everything inside and out. I went through every drawer. if I didnt know I had something, and was indifferent, it was chucked. Lots of clothes, gnarly looking pots and pans, tupperware with that eroded look inside, misc junk and more junk. I took a worn out lounger to the dump with some other trashed out furniture. if you have pressboard furniture reinforced with 2x4's - chuck it beer can collection - chuck it (my brother learned this one recently) DONT go out and buy a bunch of new stuff. If it is spartan in your house, that gives her a place to start personalizing. I didnt go out and buy new curtains, after I washed and shrunk the old ones a few months ago. This gives my wife a chance to pick something she wants... I want her to be comfortable and feel like it is her house and mine, together. Clean, disinfect, organize, purge. T minus 3 days and counting, until my world flips upside down once again...
