...so my second wife and I were married in the United States. It was on a tourist visa, which she got a few months before our planned summer vacation back to California. We live in China. About a month before we go, we find out that we're expecting. Looking at the marriage requirements for China, we just got married in my hometown because it was hella easier. (I also know from experience --my ex-wife is also Chinese -- that getting married in China has a lot of bureaucracy that I really wasn't interested in.) So we get married in California. Then we went back to China. About a month ago, my second son was born. My wife's tourist visa is good for 10 years. I want to apply for his passport but I have concerns about how it will affect my wife's tourist visa. She has no interest in immigration, but would like to visit in the summers. Will applying for our son's American passport affect her tourist visa? Looking at the instructions it says they need to see both parent's passport and marriage certificate. Thanks for the advice. maybe I'm being paranoid.

I was looking at the USCIS site for timeline information about the n400. On the site it said that as of May 31 in Sacramento, they were processing n400 cases dated January 1st 2009. Our case is March 2nd 2009, so our date is approaching the timeline limit. So my question is this. Does processing mean the actual interview or does it mean setting the appointment and sending out a letter to the applicant for the interview? Should we be making phone calls again? Thanks for all your help.

So my sister-in-law wants us to buy her a Sony laptop here at Best Buy, then send it to her in China. She already has the model in mind. The reason that she wants us to buy it for her is that it is much cheaper in the US to buy a Sony computer, probably due to tariff issues. 6000 RMB vs 10000 RMB So would we face any problems if we sent it to her via UPS? Large customs fees, things getting "lost", etc.? Thanks guys!

The registration requirement is only a secondary law that authorities use if you do something wrong. If there is insufficient proof of the first offense, then they will most likely use the non registration to make you pay, or make you pay more. This happened to me when I was living in China with my wife's family and tutoring students on the side for pay. The police just wanted their cut is all!Since they couldn't prove that I was getting paid.,(All my students said that I volunteered for free!) I got fined for failing to register instead.

So our biometrics letter came today! And it falls on the same day of our university final examinations! I love the USA!

So if we don't receive a new biometrics appointment letter soon, what should we do then? Should we call every week to check? I am beginning to think that the USCIS conveniently loses letters to keep up with their quota.

Does your wife have any family in China? You could start there! I'm sure there will always be some kind of forms that you could find to fill out.

So we get an email today and it reads: "...Our records indicate that you recently missed an appointment that we scheduled for your biometrics. Your case is currently in suspense until you complete this process. You will be receiving a notice with your new appointment time and date on it. Please follow any instructions on that notice." How could we have missed an appointment that we never received? Is it so common to have government letters lost in the mail? They really need to update their system so this type of thing does not happen. Having the only method of biometrics notification being through the US postal service is not a very reliable system. In the 21st century lost letters (and mail letters period) should be a thing of the past.

...so I call them. They give me some stupid reference number and say that if i don't hear anything in 45 days to call them back. Is this for real?

So it has been almost two months since we mailed our N-400. Receipt, yes. Biometrics appointment, no. Does it usually take this long? I have been reading other timelines and it seems that it usually takes around two weeks to get the bio appointment after receiving the receipt. Also, looking at our case status online, it says that the case is at the NATIONAL BENEFITS CENTER location. Shouldn't it be at our local field office (Sacramento)? Could our letter have been lost in the mail? Who would we call in order to find out if a letter had been sent. Thanks for any help, guys!

That's what we have been thinking too. Unfortunately, nothing at all in the mail. The case status online also hasn't changed or updated the original receipt notice date of March 7th. Should we be concerned? Is this normal?

When is our bio appointment letter gonna come anyway? Dang.
