I just listened to this on "The World"...This girl is AWESOME! She writes and performs Chinese Bluegrass on the Banjo. What a perfect blend of cultures!

Interesting, I think she qualifies as world music.

 

Have you ever heard of Bela Fleck? Plays banjo in a jazz style, very talented.

I just did a search and the only thing it came up with was one song on a CD with a bunch of other artists. The one song she has on it is with Bella fleck

Thanks Taz! I am a great fan of bluegrass, folk and world music. I was able to attend a couple of traditional Chinese music events when I was in Beijing in October. I will definitely get a copy of this unique CD.

A few years ago I heard a recording of his, a Bach prelude on the banjo. Quite skilled.

 

I studied classical guitar for years and a lot of musicans I went to school with really liked Fleck.

I just checked out the stuff she has done with Uncle Earl. Not bad, but I like her solo "Nashville-Beijing" stuff better.

Speaking of Chinese music, there was a thread here about Chinese music, that I believed had some referrences to Teresa Teng. I can't find that thread.....anyone know where it is?

I love all types of ecclectic music. I wondered when someone would get around to combining bluegrass and Chinese traditional. I'd love to hear a dobro and mandolin playing Chinese music. I think they are a natural fit in many ways.

 

Last time ShuPing and I were together, I had her listen to my bluegrass mix and she loved it.

 

The last song she played on this little news story brought a tear to my eye. The words with the music just hit me for some reason. "Without you, I don't know where home is. Without you, I'm lost on my way home." Maybe I can play it for ShuPing.

We listened to Chinese Blue Grass on the bus from Lashan to Guiyang.

 

Not to mention the horn honking every time we passed another car or truck.

 

Horn honking is very popular in China.
