"China has not given any indication on if they will reinstate the previously issues visas or not. As such, we do not have any information at this time on when travel to China will resume."

Yes - that has been exactly the status quo for over a year now.

I'm sure China's decision there will hinge in large part on whether - and when - the rest of the world can get the pandemic behind us.

My wife's daughter (Chinese national) said according to what she could find out about this mess is that yes covid is the reason but also the underlying fact that the chinese government will 'change' in 2023 and so they want to control what they can before that happens. That one was a new one to me. Don't know if that's just gossip or what.

You would sure think a government that was for their people would've made an exception for family. Tourist? Sure limit that but why break up family if they comply with whatever they ask. We were going back to care for Babba and Momma who are 93 and 83. Babba just had a stroke and is wheelchair bound now and we need to be there. So sad and frustrating.

Thanks for all the replys!

I would think that there are reasons why Xi Jinping shouldn't be elected to a third term, but the momentum seems to be there to keep him in power.

The are/have granted visas for "family emergency" - you might try talking to your consulate.

Yes, it's a very difficult situation for more than a few people.

I just saw this...

"Effective from 0 a m., 28 September 2020, foreign nationals holding valid Chinese residence permits for work, personal matters and reunion are allowed to enter China with no need for applying for new visas. If the above three categories of residence permits held by foreign nationals expired after 0 a.m., 28 March 2020, the holders may apply for relevant visas by presenting the expired residence permits and relevant materials to the Chinese embassies or consulates on the condition that the purpose of the holders' visit to China remains unchanged. The above-mentioned personnel shall strictly abide by the Chinese regulations on epidemic prevention and control."

To me this suggests going to China to unite with family and care for them would allowed.

I can understand the Chinese approach for the most part given their history, but closing off entry to immediate relatives (spouses/children) of Chinese nationals is really, really harsh. Especially since they recoup the costs of testing/quarantine by charging people who return. But it's not shocking, given how few rights spouses of Chinese nationals have while living in China. They are given what's essentially a multi-year tourist visa, and permanent residence is incredibly tough to get. And then you get people wondering why so many mixed couples end up leaving. SMH 🙁

This is on the Chicago Consulate website but for some reason they say they can't help me. I reached out to the Chinese Embassy in DC but haven't heard anything.

"2. The eligibility criteria for visa application "out of emergency humanitarian needs" will be broadened as appropriate. Foreign family members of Chinese citizens or permanent residents, including spouse, parents, children and other close relatives living together (i.e. siblings, grandparents and grandchildren), may submit visa applications for the purposes of reuniting with family, taking care of the elderly, visiting relatives, attending funerals or visiting critically ill relatives."

A very curious statement here. Can you elaborate? What did you ask of them?

Are you applying for a new visa or what?

All I asked was how can I get to China. Explained the sitiation we are in. From what I've read China has relaxed the restrictions on visa holders that need to travel there to care for elderly family members. Wife's father is 93 and just had a stroke. This is when they suggested that was only for "immediate family".

They will tell you if it's possible, or not, based on your circumstances. It may not be. Good luck.

Others are locked out from returning to China, while we know of a couple of foreigners without Chinese family who have been able to return recently with job related visas (see blondieinChina video in the Serpentza thread - http://candleforlove.com/forums/topic/48071-serpentza-and-other-vloggers/?do=findComment&comment=647550)
