But natural erosion the footsteps of millions of visitors have taken a toll on the globally recognised historical site which is crumbling in many areas.Professional photographer He Tao fell in love with the Great Wall as a subject in 2012, and has gone on to document dozens of points along the wall, which by some estimates stretches for more than 21,190km (13,170 miles). He has snapped thousands of pictures of its dilapidated walls in hopes of generating public awareness about the need for better conservation efforts.(Photo: He Tao) Edited December 30, 2020 by Randy W (see edit history) 2 Link to comment

Funny thing is that I have been there by coincidence during the 20th International Photo Festival, so that the streets were literally full of photographers, crazily equipped! Spots for sunrise and sunset were even more crowded than usual...I let you imagine! #平遥古城 #pingyao #pingyaoancientcity Edited December 30, 2020 by Randy W (see edit history) 1 Link to comment

Discover Tibet's Breathtaking Palace in the Clouds Potala Palace is one of the most well-known spiritual sanctums in the world. Quote At 12,139 feet above sea level, Potala is the highest palace in the world. The 1,300-year-old structure was originally built as a gesture of love, commissioned by Tibetan king Songtsen Gambo for his marriage to Princess Wencheng of the Chinese Tang Dynasty. Eventually monks came to rule Tibet and the palace was expanded and converted into the winter residence for the Dalai Lama. But when the Dalai Lama was exiled to India in 1959, the Chinese government took over and made the grounds into a museum. . . . HOW TO GET THERE Fly into the Lhasa Gonggar Airport or take a train into the city. Visitors must obtain a Tibet Tourism Bureau permit through a local tour agency in advance (allow up to 14 days) to enter Tibet by plane or train. HOW TO VISIT All visitors must visit the Potala Palace with a tour group. Groups are allocated an hour inside the premises and photos are not allowed. While the palace and its adjacent temples are very much tourist attractions, many of the guests are Tibetan pilgrims who have come to the sacred sites to pray. This palace, in Yunnan, is more easily accessible - Ganden Sumtseling Monastery 噶丹松贊林 Some Pictures from Kunming and Lijiang from the ChinaTrips on Facebook Quote 📍Sumtseling Tibetan Monastery, Yunnan🇨🇳 We spend an afternoon exploring this incredible monastery located just outside Shangri-la city. Referred to as the "Little Potala Palace" (the one in Lhasa, Tibet), this monastery dates back to 1679 and accommodated 2000 monks at its peak. 700 monks still live on the premises - in fact the houses at the foreground are all for living in and the buildings on the top with gilded copper roof are temples. We saw some monks practicing a dance together, seemingly preparing for some kind of event. https://www.facebook.com/2358098751081249/posts/3265732523651196 Edited December 30, 2020 by Randy W (see edit history) 1 Link to comment
