Siberian tigers die at Chinese zoo

It's pretty sad as early investigation points to the animal being fed "cheap chicken bones" and thus starving to death in the zoo.

I read in another article that 2 other starving tigers were shot at the same zoo after attacking thier keepers.

I visited a zoo in chongqing and found it a completely disgusting the way the animals were kept

When my wife and son visited this Shenyang Forest Wild Animal Zoo last year and she reported to me that on the bus the driver would offer to sell either beef or chicken to feed the tigers. Of course, they would starve the tigers on purpose so that they would come to the bus and eat from the tourists. My wife (out of 20 some odd people on the bus) was the only person that offered to buy meat for the tigers.

After buying the meat and getting a shot at feeding the tigers¡­everyone would rush up front to take pictures, but no one else offered to buy any meat. She reported that they were all out of beef but would sell you the whole chicken at beef prices¡­what a rip and the poor tigers were starving back then according to my wife.

I have been to a few zoos in China. The Beijing zoo was probably the best, but even there the tigers were kept in too small of cages. That included several HUGE Siberians.

 

In Shenzhen, there was a brand new tiger area at their zoo. Looked pretty nice. Don't know about feeding, but the bridge/walkways above the tigers seemed way too low. This was about 3 months or so after those idiots in San Fran taunted a tiger into jumping 11 ft and killing one of them. Some Chinese people were yelling at the tigers below in Shenzhen, and told Ying maybe we should split and related the San Fran story later.

 

They did have ligers and tiglons in the Shenzhen zoo which were interesting to finally see.

 

Unfortunately I think the Chinese public needs more education on how to treat animals at a zoo. I saw several people giving cigarettes and candy to the chimps. I also saw one college aged girl find a long piece of bamboo lying around and she began whacking and poking a sleeping jaguar so her boyfriend could get some pics of the cat getting pissed.

 

I was also offered a chance to get into several cages for pictures with various animals for around a 100 RMB. This included a panda. I saw several examples of previous photos there with people hugging the panda. Does anyone remember the news story about the panda that keeps attacking people at the Beijing zoo?

Surprised it's not happening more often with these opportunities to hug a panda!

 

The less said about the zoo in QingHuangDao the better, I guess. I'll end it with I never thought I could feel sorry for a crocodile until that day.

I think we was at the same zoo. You could pay exta to go through a special caged walk to see the tigers better and to feed them. The tiger show was sad to see. The tigers clearly had their teeth pulled and I am sure they were declawed also. I felt sorry for once such majestic animals being defenseless. They seemed to be very skinny to me. All of the Chinese people was enjoying the show including my wife until I pointed out to her that they had no teeth.

You would think from this picture that the tigers at the Guilin Zoo/tourist trap were well fed (at least one of them every day at 10:30), but I saw them hauling the water buffalo away after the tiger did its thing. Figured they could at least let the guy have a bite or two.

. . . especially if you bought a stick long enough to reach over the wall and trench and into their pen (with a string tied to an apple on the end). They seem like they're not really iinterested in any more here.

When I went to 7 star park in Guilin they had a tiger in the small

zoo there. For a fee you could have your picture taken sitting on the tiger. the poor tiger was so drugged all he could do was lay on his stomach and drool.

I found it very sad that such a noble animal would be reduced to such low treatment. Tigers are dangerous wild animals. There is no way you could ever trust a tiger to not attack a human sitting on it's back without drugging it into oblivion. Even an old toothless one as Roger thought might be the case.

The zoo here in Tianjin has its share of malnourished animals, this Rhino was just laying there, it looked to have an open wound in its leg that was probably infected. I haven't been back inside the Zoo since (its right across the street from me).

Its kind of strange how the Panda's don't seem to be suffering much? ;-)

 

The rest of the animals looked alright, not happy but at least they weren't on the brink of death like the rhino.

 

There was a circus act, it looked like they got the animals to do what they wanted through treats but a part of me knows that they probably don't treat them well if that doesn't work. You can take pictures with one of the tigers, I have to admit I did it with Yakun knowing the money probably wasn't going to feed them.

These stories are really heartbreaking; it is sad to see these animals so abused for the cheap thrills of some tourists. I hope as China further progresses and develops its people come to realize the tragedy of treating animals like this

First you want China to implement human rights and now you want animal rights too????

Sure would be nice, but this is just a small part of the uglyness. Whats more funny is were all worried about how these animals are treated, but none of us cry too much when it comes to how much pollution is killing ocean life, etc... That's human nature I guess.

The government doesn't take care of these animals - people do.

If the peolple do not respect rights in this simpilest form, how can they be expected to treat each other any differently?
