Easy answer. FDR is the best president we ever had IMO. He led the country out of the great depression, put people back to work, the WPA projects produced some of our greatest national landmarks. Hoover Dam for instance. He was so popular that he is the only president to ever serve more than two terms.

I'll start with my 2 favorites.

First, was the first President of the United States, George Washington. To start, General Washington was instrumental in the tactics that lead us through the Revolutionary War. No small feat in the shadow of a global power like the British Empire. Upon the end of the war, he was offered the thrown to become King here in America. To reject such position of power is amazing to me. How many men would have been able to do that? Upon being elected, he brought forth a lot of the traditions that the President still follows today. He brought in a group of advisors to help him understand the rigors of the office hence creating the first Presidential Cabinet. He also chose after 2 terms to walk away from politics and back into private life. With on exception, every President has only served 2 terms.(now by constitutional amendment) He was there at the beginning, in it seems only right that our nation's capital now bears his name.

Next on my list is the 16th President of the United States was the great emansipator, Abraham Lincoln. Having lead the country though what can arguably be called the worst of times for our nation, our Civil War, he saw us through and kept the union whole. His actions lead to the eventual freedom of an entire class of people and saw to it that, as he said himself, "that this nation, of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the Earth."

Before President Lincoln, we would say, "the United States ARE....", after, we would say, "the United States IS...."

George Washington may be the father of our country, but President Lincoln made our nation whole.

It is really hard to find the best president in the history of the US. It would be like saying Babe Ruth was the greatest baseball player of all time. The Babe came from a different era. Baseball players today live better chemically.

FDR is the president that put us on the road to socialism, wards of the government and took us off the gold standard so we can have run away inflation. I do not think if FDR were alive today he would have approved of what is going on now. I liked Truman for his no BS attitude he was far from and FDR rubber stamp guy. Nixon was a good president he just got caught. His Geo political genuise has yet to be told in history. On Mr. President Obama I have to use a quote from Winston Churchill when he was defeated by Clement Attlee in 1945 "There is alot less there then meets the eye."

In my era I have to go with Regan. He instilled confidence in the American people that we are a good people and a nation of honor and courage. Just believe in yourselves and we will do it.

This is a discussion of who your favorite past president is. Not a thread for criticizing the present president. Keep your partisan politics to yourselves.

I want this thread to represent the respect that any President of the United States deserves. There have been Presidents I didn't like because of policies or pesonal issues, but, if I ever was given the oportunity to meet any President past or present, the deserve the same respect and should be addressed only one way, "Mr. President". Unless of course we elect the first woman President, then I'd use "Madam".

I met President Ford in 1978 at Kings Island golf course. He was a very nice man. He was playing a benefit with Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis. He then along with Bob Hope went to Miami University of Ohio to accept an honary degree.

I couldn't think of a better honor than to meet the President. The closest I ever got was seeing Presitent Clinton from about 400 yard when he visited Pack Bell Park in 2000.

My second favorite president would be Thomas Jefferson. The scientist president. He wrote the declaration of independence, was a staunch believer in a seperation of church and state and sent Lewis and Clark to explore the great northwest.

i will vote for the one who had the smallest govt spending/debt and the lowest taxes on the people .

An interesting idea, the problem is, spending as well a taxation is controls by the Congress. The President can only propose what he would like to see and he will sign off on the final version, but if Congress refuses to honor his requests, as they almost always do, he will be cornered into sign thing he really does't want.

It's though ignorance and a lazy media that the President usually gets the ultimate responsibilty.

Like the quarterback getting the blame for his team loosing the game, or the credit for winning.
