Freedom is what mattered most to them and some fought for the patriots while others fought for the crown, on the vows of freedom.The 1st casualty of the War for Independance was a black man named Cyprus Attucks. Ya want to be a good Christian have at it, A good Jew go for it, A Muslim kneel your heart away, A Buddhist ok great, A Hindu maybe if your lucky you will return as a cow. Its your deal here what ever you wish to be and rever. By the way Dennis I see you changed your handle. We are in the time of change which is is good. Thomas Jefferson was very adamant on a seperation of church and state. Just because the majority of Americans may be Christian they don't have the right to force their religious beliefs through laws or public institutions on those who aren't. Link to comment

That being said, the fundimental part was that they acknowledged that our rights don't come from the king but from a higher power. Link to comment

So, does that mean a person that acknowledges no God has no rights?Not at all. It only means that very religous people are going to praise thier "God" in writing and ceremony. They were carfull not to set up a government to convert everyone to Christianity but it doesn't get past the point that the majority were. In that time, an Atheist would have the same rights as anyone, but society would have acted upon them differently. Link to comment

I think most would agree that the majority of Americans profess to be Christian yet even the smallest minority religion has the same rights to worship or not worship without the majority foisting their beliefs on them with any legislation. I was having an arguement about religion with a family member one time and they brought up the fact that another family member had been killed at the Battle of the Bulge, "protecting our right to practice the religion of our choice" and I replied, "and also died protecting our right to not practice any religion." Them ol' boys and their wimmin folk back in the 1700's had some real balls and personal courage to stand up for their rights. They spawned a great nation...one that allows it's people to do as they damn well please. This saying pretty much says it all for that long ago struggle and up until today... "A veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard, or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to The 'United States of America', for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'"
