In California, if you have a Chinese drivers license, they will issue you a 60 day temporary drivers license which can be renewed 6 times up to a year from original date. I would definitely check her out in a empty parking lot before letting her loose with your car though. Chinese standards for issuing drivers licenses are highly questionable.

Agree strongly!

I was very pleased with the required training my fiancee received in Shanghai in order to get her driver's license. I figure that if she can drive in Shanghai, she can drive anywhere. She started in August last year and just finished up this January. She had to pass 5 official tests, including an obstacle course and street driving. It costs 4,400 RMB, but I think it will be well worth it to have her prepared once she gets here. She did tell me that it was possible to skip the tests and get the license by offering 300 RMB in hongbao, but that would have defeated the purpose.

Since when has anyone ever needed to get a learners first?

If your over 18 you don't need a learners, you just have to pass the written test and the road test. Maybe this is just VA tho I dunno. I know I never took a drivers ed or had a learners permit when I got my license at 18. Tho I had been driving since I was 13 maybe they just figured it was about time to give it to me )

The learners is probably a good idea tho if she needs to actually learn to dive :sosad:

The thought of my baobei first learning to drive using my 5speed bimmer scares me greatly ><' but I was planning to take her to the country and some parking lots and let her go at it some. It would be about time for a new clutch anyway :sosad:)

In Texas, it's illegal to drive without a driver's license. That's the first thing they'd notice if you tried to take the driving portion without a learner's permit.

Its illegal here to drive with out a license as well. I guess it doesn't pertain to the driving test since you are with a instructor.

My wife had her friend in NYC send her a drivers manual from NY that was in Chinese. And she took the practice tests on the DMV website over and over. She showed her Chinese DL when we went to get the LP, and they did not want to give her the LP. Later after 2 tries, she passed the test and got the DL.

Thank you. I will begin searching for Learners Permit study materials in Chinese. Did so in the past, and Driver License website did not have anything in Chinese, but I will continue to look.

Wish the written test could be taken online as in the past!

California, and Washington State have driver's manuls in Chinese on line.
