OT - Anyone need a Chinese cook?

A long shot, but what the heck? My step-daughter (22 years old) just finished her training as a cook in Shenyang. Government certificates and all. My wife is now after me to find a Chinese restaraunt that needs a genuine Chinese cook and is willing to sponsor a work visa. More authentic than the Mexican staff that they usually have!

Not a long shot...... Start getting job applications from Vegas and Reno. Just a few years ago, Reno casinos were bringing in many people from China for jobs there. They were sponsoring workers and still might be doing so....especially a well qualified Chinese cook. Have you any idea how many Chinese people go to Reno and Vegas?

Owen, since we have been back Li has been offered several jobs in Chinese restaurants. One place nearby wanted her to teach English to their staff (all are Chinese and speak little English). After all we have been through in this process, we have decided not to take them up on any of these offers. No EAD yet. We will play strictly by the rules.

 

I doubt your daughter would have any problem finding a job as a cook.

Before I say anything, I just want to say to some of you that I

like to give honest, practical thoughts. Don't condemn me, as I

have not done to anyone.

I am very direct person, whether it may hurt or not the feelings of

other people. I don't like to bullshit just to make people happy or

pretend that life is a sea of roses. I may be sarcastic, but if you cannot

take it, then just ignore me.

 

Now to my thought on your post:

Work in the restaurant business is very tough.

Your young step daughter will become very old fast, working in such

environment, besides getting oily and dirty.

If she desires to come to US, why not find her a lucky gentleman in US,

introduce her to your single american friends.

22 is not too young to get hitched.

My wife is also a trained cook, actually she is an experienced chef and was in charge of the other cooks at a big restaurant in Dalian several years ago. She says there are no jobs for lady cooks in Chinese restaurants in America because they only want men to handle the giant woks they use in all the buffet type Chinese restaurants. Those woks are so big you could cook a water buffalo in one, so I can see what she is saying. On the other hand there are a few Chinese restaurants that are not the buffet type but you have to order from the menu. She says they still only want men. I wish I could show her there are exceptions.

Hi owen, you can try big company like PF Chang's, they probably will sponsor a work visa upon hiring.

 

I agree that working in restaraunt is tough, tell your step-daughter be prepared. I have a friend who owns a chinese restaraunt in Denver, he told me that he would not hire a woman to work in the kitchen because of the hard work. Not every restaraunt is like that but it sure is hard work.

 

You can also look into some hotels, it might be easier than working in restaraunts.

I will attest to the fact that restaurant work is very hard. Restaurant work put me through college. It's hot and sweaty and greasy and I had lots of fun! Restaurant people are excellent. When you work in a restaurant you instantly have a large network of friends.

 

Even though I think Sarah's comments are off-the-handle (whew!). I gotta agree with her. While AOF isn't being aggressive in his tone and "just stating an opinion" it's a pretty demeaning opinion. I think he's got some serious women issues.

 

I would say, if this woman likes cooking, she should do that! Encourage her!! Maybe she'll find she actually hates it. But she might also become the next Yan Can Cook. (God knows that guy's made a bucket of money.) The assumption sounds to me like AOF is suggesting that, really, the best thing for a pretty girl to do is find a nice American man to take care of her. And that's just ridiculous.

I was in the food industry for a number of years...pres of a company distributing food to restaurants, not that my opinion is any better than anyone else, but perhaps it gives me a little credibility on the topic.

 

You might try any of a number orf culinary institutes and write to them, they are an excellent source for those getting into the job market in the food business. Also, there are a number of hiring sites on the web for the food business. Also, every state has a restaurant association, sometimes more than one. Find out when the annual food show is and go to it -- there are usually several each year in every part of the country. A couple phone calls and you'll get the info. Every major restauranteer will be there.

 

The one thing I have noticed about the asian market (meaning those here in the US) is that it is very tight knit -- and there is a huge preference from within the industry to hire those that are of asian descent. On the sales side of the business, we could not even break into the market without having a salesman on the street who was asian and spoke the language. So, its not as wild a thought as you might think. And contrary to postings here, it IS a good career field. Hard work? sure, but everyone I met in china puts us to shame when it comes to hard work.

 

My last trip to china i stopped in Guilin City and spoke with a restuarant owner for nearly half the night -- i was amazed at how we, half a world apart, faced the same business problems and ran things strikingly the same. I worked in a Burger King in high school to save money for college. It was right off the I-4, which meant that people who were passing through really didn't care since they probably never expected to come back.

 

I had never worked so hard in my life. It really sucked when I showed up to start my shift and the first thing the manager said to me was "the men's restroom toilet is clogged and there is 2 inches of s--- water all over the floor. Go take care of it."

 

But I learned the value of working hard, and of making an honest living. Didn't kill me or anything and I don't think it's jaded my view of the world too much.

 

By the way, for everyone who goes to use the restroom at a fast food restaurant, please stop and think ... someone has to clean it after you're done.
