Seeking Rice Cooker

Recommended Posts

Can anyone recommend a good quality rice cooker for home usage?

My SO seeks a small one as it is only the two of us, yet I would like one that is of good quality and reasonably priced.

I did an internet search and found several steamers/rice cookers, but when she views the pics she is unsure of them since they do not resemble the rice cookers she is use to using.

Take her to the Asian markets in your area, preferably Chinese, so she can see the differences and talk with someone about them. We bought a 5 cup unit from the Korean market.

Some people will recommend getting the thicker removable pot, they say it helps when reheating by not drying out the rice.

Also plan on buying your rice in the 25 pound bag, Thailand rice is considered better by my wife. We also got a rice dispenser that sits on the countertop, it dispenses in 1 cup increments and only cost about $20. Sure beats having a bag of rice sitting in the corner.

Clayton, take a look at the "Salton" rice cookers. They work well and are not expensive. There are various models. Also, as Lee mentioned, Thailand rice seems to be the best. The brand Yonghua likes is called "Three Ladies" which is also Thai rice.

We have a Zojirushi NS-JCC18 Neuro Fuzzy 10-Cup Rice Cooker & Warmer, they arent cheap but I can tell u that we have had this one for the 5 years Lusheng and the twins have been here and it is still working just like the 1st day we purchased it, I think we paid around 125.00 for it so it has cost around 25 a year into 365, what is that 7 cents a day  And I can tell u it gets used everyday...

I bought the cheapest one at target, a rival 6 cup rice cooker.

It is really basic and simple, and turns out good rice every time.

It tends to brown the rice on the bottom, especially if you let it go on its "keep warm" mode. But, I LIKE the brown rice, so no problem.

I think the rice cooker is not really important. All will do a reasonable job. What is important is that your wife is comfortable using whatever you buy.

I will second you on this. My wife did exactly the same thing. She just uses a covered stainless steel pot to and as far as I can tell she get perfect rice every time. She said the rice cooker was way to much trouble. She cooks rice virtually every day to.

My girls use a regular stainless steel pot with a cover. We bought a rice cooker once but they took it back. A pot works just fine.

My wife likes the Thailand rice the best to. She has tried many varieties and always comes back to the Thailand rice. It is usually the most expensive but we get a 25 pound bag at Costco for about $9 now.

You mean Jasmine rice (with elephants design on the bag).

This is why I took my wife to the Chinese market and let her select her own. I would have bought a $200 fancy rice cooker, not knowing what to look for. She just bought a simple $25 dollar rice cooker we have had for two and a half years. Makes great rice everytime. She just used it for making rice/turkey soup out of Thanksgiving leftovers. It's used everyday and then sometimes twice. Makes a great steamer/heater for dim sum.

Stainless steel pot is good. Most rice cookers have non-stick inner which can come off and mix with your rice.
