Where to travel in Asia......

Recommended Posts

I will soon in the fortunate position of not needing to work for a while, so I am going to take the opportunity to travel to China for several months. While I am there I will likely be teaching English (topic for another thread) and I have talked to my fiancee and we are probably going to take a month and travel. Does anyone here have any ideas where we should go?

I have some guidelines that I want to stay in, but they are loose and if someone has a great idea, post it anyway. I am pretty open to ideas right now.

I would like the vacation to be inexpensive. Most of China and Southeast Asia is though, so that should not be hard. My Fiancee lives in Tianjin/Beijing and I have already been there. What I have not yet seen there I will soon, so that is not really what I am looking for. I think we are looking to get away from the bigger cities and see some of the more cultural/peaceful/scenic places.

Some of the Ideas that have come up and what is appealing about them:

Yun nan(sp?) = My fiancee suggests it. I do not know much about it. Anyone here have any personal experiences?

Vietnam = I would love to see Ha Long Bay

Cambodia = Ankor Wat

Thailand = Beaches/Temples

These are just some ideas that we have had. Does anyone have experience with any of these places? Are there any others that we should add? Any ideas for travel/How is the rail system in China? What type of budget should I have? The more information the better actually. Thanks!!

Guilin, and Yangshuo in Guangxi province are known for fantastic scenery. Yuangshuo has many nice shops on West St, you can rent bikes and ride out into the country side, raft on the Li river, Rock-Climb, and many other interesting things.

I have been to Yunnan, Sichuan and to Thailand. I really enjoyed Yunnan and Sichuan better. Thailand is different, the temples are nice but other than that it can cost a lot for nice things. I had some free resort time, so that okay.

In Yunnan i went to Kumming and Jinghong. Ping just went to Lijiang and sent me many pictures. I will go to Lijiang soon i am sure. Next to Kumming is the stoneforest, it was great. In Jinghong they have a good temple, I still wear the bracelet that the monk blessed. Plus, in and around Jinghong you have the Mekong river and the huge botantical gardens. I foudn a good blind massage place in Jinghong.

In sichuan I wnt to Qincheng mountain, Liou Shan (spellings) the big buddha, Neijiang and Chendu. Qincheng, LiouShang and Chendu were all very good. I tried a good foot massage place in Neijiang.

Walking up Qincheng was a great experience. I just did that this past new years, chinese.

In Thailand the temples were nice and many massage places everywhere. The strenching was great.

Ping and i went to all of these places together. On my own in past years I went to the sights in Bejing and the Shanghai area like Wuxi, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai city. All good too, but can be done an any trip thru shanghai. IF you need any food or hotel info let me know.

We were supposed to go to Lijiang on my last trip but went to Beijing instead. From the research I did as well as suggestions from members here, I found that Lijiang is very nice and has many day trip type destinations as well.

Both DaLi and LiJiang in Yunnan are very worth a visit, we had a great time there

Yes, Yunnan is one of the most beautiful areas of China. It was the most memorable trip for Mengwei and I.

If she can get visa for Thailand and Cambodia, that is where I would go. Angor Wat in Cambodia and the old capital of Thailand, can't remember the name but has museums, many wats and elephant rides.

Is it difficult for her to get a visa there? I guess that is something I never thought about......

Beautiful pictures, especially the last one. It reminds me very much of of Ouray, Colorado.

I think virtualtourist.com is the best resource you can use. You can ask questions of both residents and travelers regarding anywhere you think of going. I have several friends I made on line there as well.

Ayuttaya is the old capital, north of Bangkok.
