The good part about living in China

Recommended Posts

I will not bring an American man to live in China permanently though I can handle his visa very easily and I feel comfortable staying in Guangzhou.

1. Whenever a man of a different color, race is walking down the street, hookers always run after him. You'd be very busy to spend the rest of your life driving away hookers from him.

2. Men are men. The temptation is too much in China. I've seen two gals at CFL, the marriage ended in disaster after the wife brought the husband to China.

3. If you are not as pretty as Miss Hong Kong or Miss Asia, it's a bad idea to date any foreigner (poor or rich) in China. You will always see young pretty women who try to approach your man.

Gals, don't waste your time or life.

I have to disagree with you, SA. :)

After we got married, my husband and I lived in China for over 7 years. He is a rather handsome young man, and I am rather plain (or so-called 'huanlianpo'). We haven't encountered any trouble like you listed here. Mid-aged ladies may take a bit of their time to size me up. I got used to such glance and didn't let it bother me. We may still consider it if we have a chance to move back (that is to say, if we find a way to pay off the student loan).

It looks like we might move to Hong Kong this winter, so maybe we can be both (rich and happy, or broke and bored)....

my understanding Hong Kong was very expensive to live in or even near

I wonder if Macau is the same??

Macau is a very inexpensive city to live, especially if you do your major shopping and entertainment in Zhuhai.

From our house hunt I would say that houses in Macau are MUCH more expensive than Zhuhai...which is pretty expensive also...

I hate to continue the side topic, but... I didn't see all that many prostitutes in China, outside of the hair cutting places... But this one time...

When I first got to China, at a hotel in Xian, I used the "special soap" by accident (it's something you are supposed to use after sex). I couldn't find the normal soap, and thought that the stuff in the basket next to the sink was the free soap. It wasn't. I had to pay 10 RMB... Later that day, I started getting phone calls from women (they didn't speak english), and at one point, one even knocked on my door, "Hello! Massagie?" I just closed the door (I am a good boy, so I wasn't going to do anything I would regret)...

For me, the key to living in China is to have a good sense of humor. You need to be flexible. You need to be able to let things roll off you... And, for a lot of people, about every 6 months, they need to get some sort of Western Relief. That doesn't mean that you need to go back to the US, but it's nice to take a trip down to Hong Kong, or even Bangkok... When I started living in China, the closest fast food/pizza/ice cream/coffee was 3 hours away. There was no English language TV. I had nothing to read. So it was nice to go to HK and Bangkok to get those things (who ever thought that Thailand would be like a western detox, of sorts... but for many it is).

I used to tease the guys I interpreted for "You can check in a knock-knock hotel, waiting for the knock-knock girls to knock at your door. Prepare some cash. No money no honey! Vacuum yourself with condom from head to feet!" Now you guys know where I have learnt so many rough words in a 2nd language.

When I asked the guy I interpreted for "How are you?", before his vacation, the answer was "Terrible." after his vacation, the answer was "Excellent!"

:secret:

We had our own interpretation for English words:

MBA: Married But Available

Knock-knock girl: hooker

RMB: Return Money to Bank

Ren Min Lu: Money Road cuz Ren Min Bi is Chinese money

When I was in Chong Qing, at a dinner table, I ate a lot of zhu sheng (a kind of food from bamboo, the color is white), all the English-speaking guys and Chinese operators laughed at me and I didn't know why. Later I was told zhu sheng is good for man, to make a man strong sexually. Now you know why I'm like one of the guys.

Guys have their own language: no Chinese, no English. They exchanged sensual movie DVD's, talked about Viagra. I usually pretended not to hear or see. Edited by SmilingAsia (see edit history)

Thel good part of living in China is that the gas price is fixed there rather change on a daily basis here in State.

Now that is a very good thing. I saw one time when I was there that they were going to raise the rates and they informed the people using the news. Gas prices here are insane.

OUCH!!!

Hi Eunice,

I've been to Guangzhou four times and stayed for over a week each visit, and I have never seen any hookers, although I'm blinded by fidelity to my Lovely Wife. Is it really that bad? Am I really that bad?? I'd ask where all this is happening, but I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea! ;)

Hey, Mike. We can choose any star hotel, you walk slowly out of the lobby, your wife and I just watch at a distance of 20 meters away, I'm sure there'll be two hookers approaching you. Or you go to a cafe shop or a bar, your wife and I just stay at distance of 20 meters. Let's see what happens. We bet for $100.

Charles, your wife will come to Guangzhou for visa interview. If you accompany your wife in Guangzhou, we can try the way I mentioned above, but I think your wife will hate the bad idea :) :D

Conditions: If you are white, black or yellow, hookers will approach you. If you look like King Kong or ET, hookers may hesitate.

I have never been called Et or King Kong and have always stayed in 4 or 5 star hotels in China

I was Never ever been approached by a hooker

only had an experience when I was out walking after a cab ride to a nice restaurant and they were not very attractive and frankly scared me a little .

So I have really missed this nice experience :)

Seriously had to deal with the hookers when I was in Korea , Haiti and South America-generally they would knock at your hotel room .

So much for reasons why I like China - generally the SO's Family and Friends .

For me I always lost weight because I was sick from eating the food generally around 10 lbs - maybe we need to make another trip soon B)

I love living in China, even though I only get to be there for short periods of time.

What I think you are asking, I think comes down to personal preference.

1) Most important, I am with my lao po.

2) I like walking to the markets, and buying things my kids tease me are pets, that we then eat :)

3) I like riding the buses, my mind set is different than when I drive in america. And no, I'd never consider using the buses in america because the service is abysmal in america.

4) I like the crowds of people, when I return to america, I feel like the place is empty.

5) I enjoy riding my bike everywhere we go. I am healthier, and avoiding the cars, taxis, and buses makes me laugh every day.

6) I love the language. When I hear Mandarin, or better Suzhouese my ears feel good. I could be hearing a symphony and not be as happy.

7) I enjoy seeing the Chinese people, of course my eyes only see my lao po for women, but all the rest of the people are nice too.

8) I enjoy being a foreigner in China. I like doing something most other people won't or don't.

9) I enjoy learning a new way of life, and watching all the people around me, how they act, and inter-act.

10) I love being with my lao po. (Yes this is here twice, because I'd live on the moon if it meant being with her)

Thats my short list. I could probably keep going.

oh, did I mention the fire works, pretty much all year round?

oh, and the fact that NO ONE wears shoes in my house.

and food is good and cheap.

I best stop, I am going to check when my flight is :)

I'll agree 100% with this and the feelings are the same!!!
