Weird Chinese foods

There is a kind of tofu that has a horrible smell. Jie loves it. When I was first exposed to it, I told her, it smells like horseshit (it really does).

 

She told me it was really good, and had me try it. Well, it tasted just like it smells......horseshit.

 

 

 

That's chao dofu Ken...The stuff made with a bowtorch...Just like durian it tastes better than it smells... :o :lol:

If it looks like shit, smells like shit, and tastes like shit.......guess what........it is shit! :lol:

 

And how exactly did you gain so much familiarity with horseshit anyway??? :o :unsure:

I knew that question was going to follow, which is why I carefully worded my original statement above......I didnt say it tasted like horseshit, but rather that it smells like horseshit and tastes likes it smells! :o

A classic dish associated with Chinese is boiled fish heads. Growing up, if we saw guys eating them, we would comment "They were real Chinese".

 

A few years back a US spy plane hit one of their fighters and had to land on Hainan Island. While being detained, one dish they were served was fish heads. The Chinese thought they were giving them good stuff. The Americans probably thought they were being tortured. :unsure:

Anyway, I had black chicken that tasted a lot better than the owl. Which tasted better than the snake. Which tasted better than the turtle. Which tasted better than ......Wife could not explain it in English. But, keeping in Ken's above discription...tasted like..... All of this was in a soup. This was suppose to be a very famous soup in Nanning. Seriously, the combination of all the ingredients together was very good!! :P

After hearing some of the menu items in this thread, I guess the live 'jumping' shrimp is not such a bad thing anymore.

I guess, but it is the eating of the whole shrimp that gets me.

 

I ordered some fried shrimp. It was battered and all fried, but I would up peeling the thing before I would eat it. I thought how stupid, they are trying to imitate American food and just don't know how - WRONG.

 

Year later, wife and daughter are here. We are in Houston/Galveston, where I LOVE to eat shrimp. Daughter eats then I see her, cute 6 yrs old, stick the tail in her mouth and eat it like nothing. :unsure: She at all the shrimp tails. OK

Hey, I remember the live market in Guangzhou ----not far from Shaiman Island in the old section right?

 

I visited in 1997----by 1999, (or 2001?) it was gone, as many of the local old European and French influenced buildings were torn down...

 

The main (live market) was built in a semi circle, along a curved street with a roof that didn't quite cover the entire market, so there was a curved sliver of sky above. Man what a place! Almost looked like a zoo with all the exotic animals. Blood everywhere, but not a strong smell. I took extensive pictures, but my ex has them now.

 

I'm still seeing dog served in China. On my last trip in October, in Shenzhen, there was a chef at an open air cafe with half a dog under his arm, offering it to the seated customers....

 

Yeah I remember that the spy plane captives were offered fish heads (ha, ha)

 

---we get very fresh farm raised trout here in Oregon and my Fei loves to basicly suck everything off the head, and my girls like the eyes.. Took me a while just to watch it. When in Hunan, I was honored with a huge carp head. Flesh under the gill plates is just excellent!

I was in a city in Anhui province once. And I saw the darndest thing. They had a big rice cooker and in it was not rice but all sorts of soda and even milk. The rice cooker was heating up the bottles and cans of Coke/Sprite/Milk. Admittedly, it was winter and quite cold outside, but still, I'd want ice with my Sprite, even in that temperature. It just blew my mind away they wanted to drink heated up Coke. :blink:

 

As for stinky tofu, it reminds me of Parmesan cheese. Nothing smells worse than Parmesan cheese to me.

I was in Jinan one winter and having hot-pot for dinner with my SO and her family. She was ordering drinks and I said beer. When the beer came, it was kind of warm. Granted the temp was around freezing and there was no heat in the resturant (hot-pot, get it) but I still wanted my beer ice cold. You should see the face of the waitress when I asked if they have some cold ones. She brought some in from the storage outside of the restaurant, perfect! The waitresses were giggling and pointing while I emjoyed my ice cold beer. My SO was wondering how I don't get an upset stomach from cold drinks. :lol:

I remember how stifling hot Southern China is during the summer. My wife's apartment was a sweatbox. Florida summers are humid and sticky, but summers in China are downright brutal (I swear I was the only one sweating). I remember motioning to my wife that I was thirsty, so she came back with a cup of steaming hot water; a short time later, mother-in-law brought me a bowl of spicy noodle soup. What was I to do but please my new family. Thank God for cold bottled water and climate-controlled domiciles here in the USA! But cold soup, yuck!
