Fight at the restaurant

Recommended Posts

When you were in China, have you ever noticed that two or three Chinese fighting near a cashier desk in a restaurant? I noticed that quite a few times, because of the loud noise generated and pushing and pulling. At first I was quite amazed to see the "fight", then I realized that the real reason is that they all fought to pay the bill. You don't see that often in America, do you? :) That is culture!

I saw a hell of a fight between a doctor and patient  the doctor was attempting to throw the guy out of the clinic and the guy was pushing back with all the strength of a 100 lbs soaking wet china man :)

The real reason: The doctor refused to take 'his friends' money for treating him and was yelling at him to leave and throwing him out.. the friend was yelling with equal strength, but less success... in the end, the patient ended up out the door, humiliated that a doctor refused to take any money for taking care of him... only in china... :)

When we take a taxi in China with my wife's friends there has always been a fight over who paid the 5 RMB, usually my wife and I sat in the back and a friend was up front. After watching my wife loose this battle I came to her aid.

My wife would push money to the driver and I would intercept her friends hand when trying to do the same. The best part was when I mentioned how lovely her hand was as I was holding it from giving the driver money. :headbang: ;)

This was more commotion than a fight but there was very harsh words exchanged during the cooking of the chicken in the hot pot. As the pieces of the chicken began to surface, each member of the dinner party would dive there chopsticks into the mixture to capture the premier pieces, ie... feet, head, gizzard etc... The head popped up and I guess my brother in law poked someones hand with his chopstick and the yelling was on!!!

I just sat and watched in amazement...

Looks like a similar experience of not being able to pay the bill and always losing the "fight". Not being fluent in the language puts us at a real disadvantage when a native wants to pay the bill.

What I do is I tell them I'm going to the bathroom, but instead I ask the staff to tally up the bill and pay there.
