Wife has PRC Driver's License

Recommended Posts

If I read Texas law correctly, the state will allow her to drive here for up to one year on entry into the USA on her PRC license. Since she has no SS# I want to get around it as TX requires it for a state license.

I wrote the state to see what they have to say, since I am not a lawyer and to verify what I think I read. I will call my insurance co to see if I can add her without a SS#. Hmm, wonder if I should do that. Anyway it is best I find out.

Somewhere I read she needs to get an International Permit in multi language including English. Will see if they have them rather than getting a notorized translation. PRC does not recognize them from another country. Wonder if they issue them for their citizens to travel abroad?

Out-of-Country Driver License

1) How long can I drive with an out-of-country driver license?

Generally, a person 18 to 75 years of age with a valid out-of-country driver license in their possession may drive a private, non-commercial motor vehicle in the State of Texas for up to one year from date of entry into the United States, if their home country has reciprocity with the U.S. In order to check for reciprocity agreement status, click on Reciprocity In Driver Licensing or you may contact License Issuance at (512) 424-5089 or by e-mail at license.issuance@txdps.state.tx.us. 37 Texas Administrative Code 15.91.

I will keep this thread updated. Or if some of you are ahead of me I would appreciate any advice. I did a search in CFL but found nothing about a spouse having a Chinese license. Funny if this works as the PRC does not recognize our license.

I suppose every state is different. Oregon wouldn't recognize my wife's PRC licence since there is no reciprocal agreement with the PRC like there is with Canada or Mexico. Same with my insurance company. Since there was no way to check her PRC driving record I had to put her on as a new driver. Higer rates.

but actual requirements are left to the individual states and/or insurance companies and/or banks. They are not required to offer you a driver's license or insurance or a bank account if you don't have one.

The web page you link to ends with the caveat of how to prove to someone that you CAN'T get an SSN, if you are not Employment Authorized ( and says this MAY be helpful to prove this).

But most ARE willing to work around a non-existant SSN (including the State of Texas).
