jbray
philb, that's so funny... I did the same thing several times last summer. That stupid bamboo mat was so uncomfertable. I have a plethera of body hair that would get caught in the bamboo. I really hated it. Several nights I just slept on the floor. It was more comfertable and actually cooler. It's amazing how far I've come in just too months... Now I even have a sit-down toilet! I don't have to boil the tea pot when I want to take a hot shower. Link to comment
msmckee
I will most certainly NOT tell her who has slept in my bed (Before we met - of course)! Don't ask - don't tell....165166If she is anything like my wife you forget the don't ask half of that equation. It took me two months to "put to bed" any notion that any other woman had even laid eyes on the bed. Hell, I had a used washer that I had to explain Link to comment
mercator
LOL. Yes, when I was in GZ I found the hotel beds to be hard as a rock. I wondered if they inadvertantly switched the boxspring with the mattress. Luckily they had pads in the closet for the wimpy Meiguoren At her family home she had a nice mattress and box spring. Not different than the mattresses i've owned in the past. Well, except for the bamboo mat. OUCH. Like a board. Once we had our wedding ceremony, her sister gave us a gift of wedding bedding (red/gold dragon/phoenix). Apparently the bamboo had to go at that point, and it was nice to get full nights' sleep again Link to comment
Joanne
My mom always complains that our mattress was too soft, it made her back ache. My mother-in-law complains that our mattress was too hard, she actually got a raw spot at her tail bone, so I have to go get a soft cushion to lay on top of the mattress. After you bring out this topic, I start to think about this phenomenon. My conclusion is: the bone shapes are different between our two races. Caucasian, in general, have more curved spinal column. Following this theory, I can understand why my baby always sleeps on her stomach, because if she lays facing up, her fanny would be in the way. Well, I would better cushion her bed up RIGHT NOW!! MoonCarolCafe
I remember Jun's bed in Hefei felt like someone took a perfectly good mattress and put a piece of plywood on top of it.Word. The first time I sat on a Chinese mattress I thought the same thing. "Oh my gosh! Somebody has stolen the mattress and replaced it with a mattress-shaped wooden box!" Link to comment
jim_julian
Hmmm ... guess I'm wierd. I sleep really well on a nice hard Chinese mattress. Of course it might have something to do with who's there with me ... Link to comment
skibum
In a small hotel I slept on a wooden bed one night. Not as bed as I expected. If you want to buy one of those sheets that the quilt goes inside, try overstock.com They had some last time I looked. Link to comment
Yuanyang
After my 2nd back surgery I threw out the POS mattress and box springs because they were too soft. I now have a Select Comfort and love it. But in preparing for the soooo-Orthopedically correct mattresses in China, I've pumped that thing up to 90. B) Link to comment

skibum
I think everyone isn missing the important thing here -Merc"s SO is TELLING HIM what to do. A bad start! Link to comment
mercator
Let's just say I won't bring it up again. If she remembers or asks again, I will talk to her about it. I don't see it as her telling me what to do as much as making me aware of a cultural concern of hers. I'll certainly listen to all of those she has, and we'll figure out a remedy together Link to comment
philb
Merc: You just keep telling yourself - YOU DA MAN; YOU DA MAN....can I introduce you to the Triggster....keeper of the mop catalog? He has suggestions for all occasions.... YOU DA MAN, LOLPHIL Link to comment
drive_75
Hmmm... You know, I believe in honesty. But I also sometimes believe in saving people from themselves, saving people's feelings, saving face, and yes! SAVING MONEY. Sometimes a little white lie is not an evil thing. (unless you think that could jinx the marriage "sleeping on the bed of lies" and all that) 165077I agree. What she doesn't know doesn't hurt. Link to comment
mercator
ROFL on the beginning of training. Yes, I am well aware I am being trained, even from 10,000km away! I am already making room for all of her things, and I know the actual 'where' the things will go will be determined for me. LOL I am sure we will be buying some furniture as well. I am still allowed a few vices, though it may be because she is *as of yet* unaware of the expense they involve. One thing that is a huge plus is that she is looking forward to riding 2up with me on my motorcycle. It took me explaining that no, I don't drive like GZ moto taxis and no, she wouldnt have to sit side saddle on a luggage rack, and that she would have a full set of armored riding clothes and a good helmet. The idea of her sitting back there giving me a 'long hug' is also a big reason she is game for it, and it works for me too, of course Link to comment
alaskagypsy
Select Comfort mattress the only way to go.No problem whatsoever with a bed when she got here.
