edith just bought a one-way ticket for her self from some guy in GZ near the consulate. i guess on 001 he has a reputation of being "a really nice guy".

it was by far the best deal out there. ticket was a flight on NWA for $671.... that same price was advertised on uschinatrip.com, but was not available when i called... closest was $900+. flychina.com also only had tickets in the $800-$900 range. the same itinerary from nwa.com was $1100.

if you really want i could ask edith for that guy's name and number. let me know.

I have had good luck changing my return flight when booking a roundtrip ticket. when my darlin came to the US she was able to get the tickets sunstantially cheaper in china than I could book them on the internet.

Sooo, if you can book a roundtrip and chnage flights to match what she can get in china??????????

The ticket prices are fixed by the airline and the "agents" make their money on delivery fees

Steve, I recall you said this before and found it different from my past experiences. Also, yesterday  we just bought 1 way tickets here and the prices of five agents varied from 4,200 to 5,500 RMB. The day before the 4,200 ticket WAS 3,800 at IATA. Wife was concerned with someone coming to the house the day before so we went there in person yesterday- a day and RMB 800 too late). The ticket squeeze is NOW ON FULL SCALE and prices have jumped. Consistently the low fares from Shanghai to LAX were all on China Eastern and/or Korea Air (Except for 1 Thai Int'l. flight). Best deal in town (right now) is the BIG IATA office on Changshou Road. acw

I briefly dicussed this with a Singapore Agent and they are familiar with the process.

They said I could go to the office in SF and make the booking with a copy of my SO's passport. My SO could pick up her ticket at the Singapore office in GZ.

I haven't checked with Cathy Pacific yet, another option.

Since my SO lives in GZ I think we may spend a few days in HK

before heading back to SFO. May want to "live it up" and get a harbor

view hotel room and enjoy a special time in HK.

I think her trip to the US should be a special one.

I booked two one way tickets at a local travel agent for my wife and new son without any documents to show that they even exsisted. The travel agent just warned me that if the name on the ticket did not match the passport they would not be able to board. <_<

I took a chance and it worked for me. I know others who it did not work out the same for, so take what I did with the knowledge that it is a gamble.

She wanted me to escort her to the US. The only way this would happen is for her to be on my return flight. So I booked my R/T through www.flychina.com on Northwest Airlines, at the same time I booked her one-way on the same flight as my return leg. It was booked far enough out that if she received blue slip from GUZ we would have one shot at overcome. Luckily we did not need it.

We hit one snag at the airport. She would have not known what to do if she had traveled alone. They told us she could not board because she did not have a return ticket. "I don't think you understand. She is immigrating to the US on a K1 visa. You cannot make us buy a return ticket. Get your superior or whoever, but we are getting on that plane!!!"  It took a surpervisor (who also had no clue), then they finally called over the big supervisor. He carefully looked at her passport, ask to view the DOS Packet. and then said, "I see no problem."

This is great stuff, we should have a special place in the forum just for listing travel ideas and deals...

thanks, Hank
