  1. An ongoing topic - click here for Most Recent Post I find it very difficult to make an online payment to a Chinese hotel, airline company or merchant when I am in the United States. In order to set up WeChat Pay, Alipay or any online banking payment from a Chinese Bank in China, the standard procedure is for them to send a short text message to my Chinese cell phone to instantly verify that I am a legitimate user. But my Chinese cell phone is off when I am in the USA. How to do this? I have thought the following options when I cannot receive Chinese instant text verification message: (1) Forward the Chinese cellphone text message to a email address, so that I can see? This does not seem a good method. (2) Open Alipay account when I am in China and when I am able to receive China text message. Then when I come back to the US, using Alipay or Wechat Pay do not require China text message verification. (3) Any other method? Thank you. Paul
  2. Hi. I am in China and finding that I want to text message folks back in the states. I am using a local sim card for my local calls. I am trying to figure out how to send messages on my ATT&T phone ( or my computer) that is in the airplane mode. I would like to send and receive message to folks that don't have We chat and QQ. Friends and coworkers. In the states I use Facebook messenger and I guess the other one is AT&T messenger. I can access the internet on my ATT&T via Wi-fi. That doesn't see to help me out. Any suggestions. Danb PS. AT&T is offering me an international plan for 40 dollars a month. Free text message and a think $1.00 a minute for calls: Dan : The AT&T Passport includes unlimited text messages, rate of $1.00/minute, unlimited Wifi and 200mb of data (Overage: $0.25/mb). With a one-time fee of $40.00, it will apply for up to 30 days. Dan : We also have a higher data bucket that are Dan : The AT&T Passport SILVER includes unlimited text messages, preferred rate of $0.50/minute, unlimited Wifi and 300mb of data (Overage: $0.20/mb). With a one-time fee of $60.00, it will apply for up to 30 days.
  3. I'm sure others have asked this, but I don't seem to be able to find the threads. What is the best way for my wife to call her parents in Xi'an? They are elderly and do not have access to a computer. Thus, my wife will need to call their cell phones directly, preferably from her own cell phone. Last year, I tried Skype to cell service in China, and it didn't work at that time. I have no idea if it works better now. I know there are some plans that allow you to call their service first, then that routes you through an alternate line for connecting to a phone in China. I simply seem to be unable, in my still jet-lagged state, to be able to figure out the key search words for Google to find them. Thank you for your suggestions.
  4. Hello. Last night I was trying to chat with my Lao Po friend's daughter. We started off with QQ Chat. I am much more familiar with using that that . My new friend wanted to use Wechat. To be truthful I didn't have any/much experience using Wechat. I have it on my phone and I have been logged into for about a year but I don't even know my password for it. With QQchat video chat, we can talk, use our webcam and also type messages, all at the same time. With Wechat we were mostly sending audio packets. They were short audio files of say about 20-30 secs long. Not really live. Does any one know if I was using Wechat correctly? Are there similar Wechat features like the ones when I use QQchat. Ability to talk, video and typing all at the time. At the moment my new friend had only her mobile phone. On my mobile I am already logged( always logged on) onto Wechat and QQ chat. On my computer I am logged onto QQ chat only. Wechat is asking for a password. Not sure what that is. I hope I wrote that down somewhere. As usually with computers I learn just enough to get things to work. I wonder how to reset my password. Danb
  5. A good article about a foreigner's experience with the WeChat app, which you see people using everywhere. In most cases, it's better than a phone call, since it won't require immediate attention Life in the People’s Republic of WeChat My full (and mostly successful) immersion in China’s everything app.
  6. I just spent the better part of three hours figuring this out and thought I'd put some instructions out there for anyone who is attempting to do this. I did this with an iPhone 5 that had iOS 7. Hopefully at some point someone makes these instructions into an app. Part I) Getting the file 1) Connect your iPhone, and download iClover:http://www.iclover.com/ 2) Once its installed and your iPhone is plugged in, open iClover. 3) Install this app and connect your iPhone to the computer. 4) Click on "File System" on the tool bar. 5) Open the following directory path -> Apps(User) -> 微信 6) This should display two folders. One will be all zero's and have one file in it. The other folder is the one we want, mine is named "3299b657a598b94d97eea206c1102bb3" 7) Click on this folder and then the "DB" folder. 8) There should be a file named "MM.SQLITE", right click this and from the drop down menu click "export" . Save it to your desktop. Part II) Your chat history is in this file, but this is a database file and will need to be opened, and the conversation extracted. 9) Download SQLite Database Browser : http://sourceforge.n.../sqlitebrowser/ 10) Unzip the contents and open "SQLite Database Browser 2.0 b1" 11) Go to File -> Open Database, and open the MM.sqlite which should be on your desktop. 12) Click the "Browse Data" tab. 13) There should be a drop down menu labeled "Table:", click on this and there should be a list of all of the Tables in this database. 14) Each conversation will be labeled "Chat_" followed by a strange name. Click on each one until you find the conversation your interested in. 15) Once you know the name of the Conversation... mine started with "Chat_4f4c9..." and was a really long name. Once you know the name go to the File menu.. File-> Export->Table as CSV file 16) Save it to your desktop. Part III) You now have your conversation in the csv format with excess data. Download http://www.openoffice.org/, OR use Microsoft Excel to clean it up. 17) Open this in Excel or OpenOffice and begin to clean it up. 18) Your first row should say this, and I will being referring to these columns by name: "TableVer" "MesLocalID" "MesSrvID" "CreateTime" "Message" "Status" "ImgStatus" "Type" "Des" 19) By right clicking the column letterhead delete these columns "TableVer" "MesLocalID" "MesSrvID" "ImgStatus" "Type" "Des" If you want time stamps following these directions, if you know how to use Excel, otherwise skip ahead to step 21) 20) The equation to change the column "CreateTime" to an actual time stamp is as follows: +D2/(60*60*24)+365.25*70-0.25, you can then convert that to a date stamp, if its off by an hour then to add or subtract hours is +/-(1/24). Fill the column with that equation, and then copy and paste it as numbers. 21) Delete the "CreateTime" column, just as was done in 19) 22) Look at the "Status" column, it should be listing some numbers, one of those numbers is going to be your ID, and the other will be the opposite ID. 23) You can replace these ID numbers with names by highlighting the "Status" Column. Now get to the Find/Replace toolbox. You can do this by looking to your tool ribbon for Home->Editing-> Find a pair of binoculars (sp?) or the words "Find & Select". You could also press Ctrl-F. Either way once you get to the find toolbox, hit the "replace" tab, and type your ID number in "Find What" and then in "Replace With" type your name. Hit Replace all. Repeat this for all members of the conversation. 24) Now delete the Title Row, to eliminate all those names. Part IV: Almost done! Grab the text 25) Save your file and keep the formatting as a CSV file. 26) Open notepad ... Start Menu ->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad 22) File-> Open; At the open screen look for a drop down menu that is labeled "Text Documents (*.txt)" click it and it will drop down, click "All Files", you should now be able to find and open your csv file that now holds your cleaned up conversation log. 23) You can now copy and paste this log into whatever you wish, it should be formatted and good to go. Let me know what you think. Hope this helps anyone who needs the information. Happy hunting

  8. XcodeGhost hack: Delete these infected iOS apps immediately Apple’s App Store got hacked. The walled garden that is the App Store was breached by Chinese hackers and forced the company to remove around 85 iOS apps that were infected with malicious software. While the news of the hack sent shockwaves through the Apple fanbase, the disturbing part is not that it happened, but that it was delivered through software downloaded by apps developers. Hackers encouraged developers to install a modified version of Xcode—the developer environment that helps programmers write iOS and Mac OS apps—with the malware appearing to be a legitimate version. Several of these iPhone apps we use to communicate with loved ones, (WeChat) http://www.cultofmac.com/389693/xcodeghost-hack-delete-these-infected-ios-apps-immediately/ http://arc.applause.com/2015/09/21/xcodeghost-hack-faq/ http://researchcenter.paloaltonetworks.com/2015/09/malware-xcodeghost-infects-39-ios-apps-including-wechat-affecting-hundreds-of-millions-of-users/ http://www.cultofmac.com/389696/protect-yourself-from-massive-ios-security-breach/ http://www.komando.com/happening-now/326601/apple-app-store-hit-by-huge-malware-attack Here’s a full list of infected apps: WeChat Didi Chuxing Angry Birds 2 NetEase Micro Channel IFlyTek input Railway 12306 The Kitchen Card Safe CITIC Bank move card space China Unicom Mobile Office High German map Jane book Eyes Wide Lifesmart Mara Mara Medicine to force Himalayan Pocket billing Flush Quick asked the doctor Lazy weekend Microblogging camera Watercress reading CamScanner CamCard SegmentFault Stocks open class Hot stock market Three new board The driver drops OPlayer Mercury WinZip Musical.ly PDFReader Perfect365 PDFReader Free WhiteTile IHexin WinZip Standard MoreLikers2 CamScanner Lite MobileTicket iVMS-4500 OPlayer Lite QYER golfsense Ting Golfsensehd Wallpapers10000 CSMBP-AppStore MSL108 TinyDeal.com snapgrab copy iOBD2 PocketScanner CuteCUT AmHexinForPad SuperJewelsQuest2 air2 InstaFollower CamScanner Pro baba WeLoop DataMonitor MSL070 nice dev immtdchs OPlayer FlappyCircle BiaoQingBao SaveSnap Guitar Master jin WinZip Sector Quick Save
  9. WeChat overseas user number hits 70 million I wonder how many USA CFL members have WeChat in their house?
  10. Who knew? Not me. My wife's cousin in China sent (transferred) money last night to my wife who is here in the US. How? WeChat Chinese version has a 'wallet' feature. My English version of WeChat on my USA version cell phone does not have it. My wife put her China based phone sim card into the Samsung Notepad 4 she bought last year in China. Up popped a message from the cousin about money has been transferred. My wife then used her WeChat wallet to 'send' the money to her CCB bank account. On a side note, now when my wife uses her China based CCB credit card here in the US to make an online purchase in China, she is able to receive the cell phone confirmation code message required in China on the Notepad, also here in the US. When she first inserted the Sim card into the Notepad she had to accept "Use this for International Roaming" or some such message. An example from a web search; "Chinese WeChat users can now find a new "shua ka" or "Small Payment" feature inside the "Wallet" section of the app. Pressing the icon and entering one's password for WeChat payments will automatically generate a QR code or a barcode. Using that, one can make in-store payments in such places as Dairy Queen and supermarket chain One Plus One where the retailers can scan the code to accept payments." at- http://english.cri.cn/12394/2014/09/15/1261s844219.htm
