  1. Yeah, I think Carl might be on to something... Clackamet is on the Willamette River isn't it? Also want to suggest (again) the Latural State park --- also has a shelter, is in the very pristine Columbia river gorge --- but east --- (about 20 mins. by car) -- not west of Portland.
  2. AHHHHH ........... JIM ~! NEED FOR YOU TO CHECK IN~!!! LOT OF PEOPLE HERE NEED TO KNOW WHERE THIS EVENT IS HAPPENIN' ! LONG STRIDER SEEMS TO HAVE A GOOD WEST SIDE LOCATION .... althought it does seem to forclose the roasting of a whole "beast" ..... see how tactful I'm being
  3. "now you rub salt in the wound..." don't matter whether you goat boy or sheep boy ..... rubbin' it with salt is part of the process of prepin' it: FOR THE SPIT !!! June 26 --- BT or BS
  4. Trigg, Trigg........... ....... its almost July when it happens... what? no BBQ?? .....Relax..... ...... nothin' like "Silence of the Lambs" .... ..... you won't hear anything! (plus, its delicious..)
  5. Most Excellent! This is a wonderful outcome! It represents trememdous continuity, and I personally want to thank all who have been working behind the scenes to bring this about ! There have been so many heart-felt messages here, and i know I am one of many who, ultimately, return to the TRUE old timers --- those of the Black Hole days ---- to issue a special vote of thanks --- it was your passion that brought this site to conception.. Robert S. ... want to thank you for your comments about that... and congradulate you regarding the more literal meaning! (I'm sure he does have your good looks..) Don, I have complete confidence in your leadership! I would add this: There is a younger faction, and yeah, maybe not always the most tactful (not like Trigg, for instance...) JP probably falls into that category, but he also is smart, and one of the strongest supporters of the Candle... I personally would like to see him become an administrator ----- shoulder the burden, and some of the responsibility --- learning experience on his part, and the Candle (in my opinion) would benefit greatly too...
  6. Dons Right ~! And i knew the answer !! (ha, ha!) But the history of the world's smallest park (I read about it maybe ten ¥ears ago) --- isn't exactly about a manhole cover (although that is about the space it takes up) ---- its about the space taken up by a utilility pole. Seems there was a columnist at the long now defunct Portland Journal ( it went out of business shortly after I wrote several opinion pieces there in the late 1970's )... ...... said columnist ---- was writing in either the late 1940's or early 1950's ----- (the Journal offices looked out on the the avenue then called Front --- now called Nato --- ---- anyway, this columinist lamented the "progress" of city hall that was pulling up the utility poles to make room for the four lanes that are now present on Nato parkway... ..... As a concession to him, City Hall, declared the spot of the utility pole (pulled out of the ground) outside his window, in front of the Journal offices ---- a city park... ....It was only later that someone said: Wait a minuite! I think we have the world's smallest park here! And as they say: "the rest is history!"
  7. It seems to me that in the big cities at least, (if you seek it out) medicine practiced in China is nearly identical to that in the US. Fei is being treated for an on-going medical problem, and both her treatment and the medicine used are identical in China and the US. Also the ongoing lab work that I have reviewed is very professionally prepared.
  8. Jim, Really looking forward to what you come up with~! But since we will have out of town guests, perhaps we might want to include lunch (Sat. 6-25) --- perhaps in the Gorge?
  9. Good point Dan, But personally, if thats the case, I'm only interested in the front half......
  10. OK, I've been sitting on my hands here long enough ---- Perhaps since we (finally) might have some out of town ---- but not unfamiliar with the great PNW --- members comin' to this great event ---- we stage it in a beautiful place ie. ---- the Columbia River Gorge ... Took Fei and the girls up for one of our many hikes there ---20 mins. east of Portland ----- Beautiful! Visited Latural Falls --- Super nice! and an Oregon state Park with fairly light use near by.... Apparently, not a a fire ring large enough to roast a whole lamb...... but, hey! We could get by...........
  11. Yeah, Its a Sht load of additional work .... What Fei and I did is this: Get the checklist from your local INS office (even if you have to make an appointment ---- as you do now in Portland) with the checklist will come all of the forms you need. Then, fill out the forms, and all the pixs. and other requirements ---- such as seperate checks for each segment etc. and re submit it: IN ORDER !!! ....with a photo copy of the checklist ----- and on top of that ----- in bold letters write this: DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED IN THE ORDER REQUESTED ON THE CHECK LIST. I have to believe that helps expidite your process ---- Fei entered the US in December 04, and now has her approvial for the green card.. (although, should add: Portland has a track record for being fast...)
  12. ... they take a no-nonsense approach... So true David, when I met my first daughter in Nanjing, she would avoid all frustration by simply stabbing her food with one chop stick ....
  13. AHHH Yes Carl ~!! Bing at Crown Point! (great picture, ~Gateway to the Columbia River Gorge) Just one of many spectacuar natural wonders near by.... BTW, Mt. St. Helens is arrupting to the north of us as I post... Cool, but not threat to Portland...
  14. OK, We are off topic a litttle.... (not too much) --- so let me close by saying that for daughter #1, at age two, I made her small chop sticks with slits at the ends, so she could easily pick up food .... worked great! Very little of the "frustration factor"
  15. David, BCC, yeah, I can see that! But there is no poo' side of town in Montgomery Co. now really, is there? In 1968, Walter Johnson and Walt Whitman went head to head for the regional swimming championship (DC region) --- I was the Co-captain of the Walt Whitman team at the time, so naturally, that is why I suggested WJ
  16. Trigg, Number 1: Stay the Hell away from Montana, (which is north of us as the wind blows, and probably a factor in your flight plan... ) Number 2: Stop talkin' this way: Naturally, we expect the PRC Gov. to be shadowing the Candle --- but ever think about Homeland Security??? No need to visit Montana, any more than the Dakotas.... Number 3: Maybe need to consider the comfort of the SO...... Probably doesn't want to spend a week in the air with bugs in her teeth....
  17. David, Walt Whitman HS, class of '68' --- at the time, it was the "Home of the Dome" --- one of the very first geodesic domes..... historic..... but torn down.... couldn't belive it when I returned for the first time several years ago...... No, never ate too much Blue shell in Bethesda (too damn expensive...) My best blue shell crab eatin' occured on the St. Mary's river ( I am a graduate of St. Mary's College of Maryland) ----- and to be honest, a chicken neck and a long pole crab net were a large part of my "gormet" diet as an undergraduate (that and raw oysters in the winter...).... Sorry, Dan, don't know the place you speak of in Balmer....
  18. "Be wary, I'm coning with my fishin' gear in hand!!" Wonderful... instead of us all chippin' in for a nice young rack of lamb.... ....... we'll have to chip in for Trigg to make bail In TN after he tries to get on the plane with his "fishin' gear"
  19. David, You are a Marylander??? so am I! Born in DC, but raised in Bethesda... Yeah, Dungenous crab are very, very good... ....... but the blue shell crab of the Chesapeake Bay is the food for the Gods.....
  20. EAT ME~! Hey, Jim, can you find a place on the west side that might have facilities (large fire ring, for instance) where some of us could arrive early with a spit and a ........ lamb...
  21. David, You make some valid points about the "work" of food in China --- of course, it is part of the presentation --- if bone or shell are part of the dish, presumably it slows down the consumption, so that the diner savors the taste more.. I remain unconvinced: Having eaten far too many very good crabs (to start out with) in China ----- (even live crab imported from the US) --- trashed by the tradition of chopping it into small pieces, shell and all ---- there is a very logical way to "dress out" crab, as there is with most foods, including chicken... Personally, I think it makes the dinning experience more enjoyable to disassemble every dish in a logical manner...
  22. The bone thing is a huge issue here .... Fei's cooking is very traditional So.CH ---- with a Hunan kicker... ...so bone in the food is expected... My Chinese daughters do much better than I do on this issue ---- I don't really feel comfortable sorting through fish (or chicken) in my mouth to seperate bone. And like most westerners, do't like to spit it out in front of company.. Fei, however, will take the head of the fish and basicly suck everything from it: eyes, skin, brains, etc... no problem.....
  23. HA HA ~! GREAT point David! I'm sure when Trigg is done splainin' thins' to the IO, he'll be ready to to call it a day! "ok, ok, you pass~! "
