  1. and usually in the 110 volt version so you don't need a converter.
  2. Holes will be the least of your worries! Just do it. Get it over with. Your nerves won't settle down until she's here for a few years.
  3. Simple if you speak Geek. Do just what I did. Scan the forms in, send them through a form filler program and create a text search-able PDF with acrobat fill-able text fields. Add Chinese IME to to your computer. Add Chinese support to your Acrobat 8 standard. Then type away. Then print the form.
  4. Every time I visited my wife (fiancee then) or went to China to attend the interview, I made sure they knew by registering with the consulate online. I felt this was a great tool for keeping them informed. Not sure if it made a difference or not, but she had no problems at the interview.
  5. They do not have a fiancee visa option, so marriage is a must. We were starting to help a friend of my wife's so we looked into it a little. Here are a few links. http://www.canadianvisa.com/family-visa.htm http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/index.asp
  6. Just to give some feedback on what I have found. The OP's post was for some software called "Kingsoft Fast-AIT-Translationexpress2009". This software is designed for cutting and pasting whole page text. Translation can go from English-Chinese or Chinese-English. Translation of single words require cutting and pasting or typing in. This is okay, but not what my wife needs as for her application translation was slow. Her English is good enough she only needs to have single words, mostly medical terminology translated. I found some additional software, "Kingsoft PowerWord2009". This is some awesome translation software. It will translate words at the simple hover of the mouse in word, a web bowser or pdf pages. Translation is English-Chinese or Chinese-English. The professional edition allows for translation of professional specific terms, ie.. medical. This is just what my wife needed. I scanned three of my wife's textbooks and created searchable PDF's. She brings up the PDF, hovers over a word and it will bring up the definition of the word. This will make studying fast, easy and well worth the addtional cost of the professional edition. I found a 30 day trial download for those who wish to test drive it. http://cb.iciba.com/buy/en/1003.html
  7. Yes or no, I guess it depends on which of your question I am answering Yes, He can get citizenship through her. At the swear in ceremony, my wife was reminded that any children under 18 get automatic citizenship. So, no he does not have to apply separate as long as she is sworn in before his 18th birthday.
  8. Great article with some good points. I like the idea that a VO is interested in seeing the couple together. The best way to determine a true relationship is watching the couple interact. Another thing I noticed, it re-enforces my idea that when in doubt deny and a legitimate couple will overcome. I am very sure they already use this approach, but apply it to other situations.
  9. China has one of the highest visa fraud rates with several marriage fraud rings busted in the last few years. This way they can train their VO's to be specialists at trying to deny the ones who are fraudulent. The only problem is that some innocent ones get denial as well. The fraudulent ones tend to just go away, the bonafide ones are pissed and want to duke it out with GUZ. This is why when they are in doubt, they will issue white and see what happens.
  10. I seriously doubt it has anything to do with space. Remember, they just finished moving the visa section less than four years ago. They could have easily made it larger with enough room to allow spouses to attend the interview. They prposely kept it smaller. My guess is they are going under the age old adage of divide and conquer. They believe by separating the couple they can break the couples who aren't true. The only problems is many innocent couples get caught in the spider web as well.
  11. I downloaded the software. It seems to work fairly good for English to Chinese translation. My wife needs this for going to school (massage therapy) and the medical terminology is has very helpful. I have heard of programs that let you convert from English to Chinese by simply moving your mouse over a word. Does anyone know where to get this kind of program?
  12. Wonderful.. Congrats.. It's over!!! unless you are going to file for some family members
  13. I have used mileage cards for years. First with American, then United, and now with NWA. Miles have paid for a trip to Tulsa (saw my nephew graduate tech school) on American and a trip to Hong Kong in 2007 on United. My wife didn't care for United (customer service issue). NWA opened a better route for us anyway (Portland-Tokyo-Guangzhou) so we switched. Now we both have a miles card. I am primary on one so miles go into my NWA account and Lisa is primary on the other. Normally, miles expire for people who travel as infrequently as we do. Using the card is seen as activity on your account and keeps miles from expiring. This is why I went with two separate cards. Having Lisa primary on the second card helps build her credit rating as well. Great way to get extra trips to China no matter who you select.
  14. I had quality problems most of the time. My wife was always complaining about the connection to China. I switched from Comcast to Verizon FIOS. The quality is so much better. Now, we never have a quality issue. Looks like Verizon FIOS not available in my area (South Florida East) so guess I'll have to wait till it is available. Any other options for home phone and internet? Your quality issue with Comcast concerns me. My objective is to get italkBB. Like Craig, my connection with Comcast varied a great deal. My connection with Comcast was suppose to be 5MB. It measured anywhere from 4.2MB to 1.6MB. When Lisa would complain I would measure right then and it would show less than 2.8MB. The upload always showed .384MB. My sister would said it was kind of hard to hear me from time to time. VoIP does eat up some bandwidth and really needs it to be constant so you don't get any packet loss or delays. This is where you get quality issues with VoIP. So I wouldn't do less than 5MB down and 1MB up if you have it connected to your home router shared with other computers. When I had FIOS installed they made an error in setting it up. I was only getting 5/2 service for the first week, but I was really getting 5MB down with them. The phone was instantly better on both ends. It was like night and day. Once Verizon set my service to 15/2, I really didn't notice any change with ITalkbb quality. Check to see if Verizon knows how long before they have service in your area. It is really worth getting . Prices are comparable to Comcast, but the speeds are more consistent. You can still use ITalkbb with Comcast, just be prepared for some quality issues. Also, talk with Carl (waredbored), he has both Comcast and ITalkbb, as FIOS is not available in his area yet. See if his experience is the same. It just might be worth the switch while you are waiting for FIOS.
  15. Yes - you would need a computer connected to the Internet - plus the iTalkBB box connected to a phone line - not exactly portable No.You do not need a computer. The ITalkbb box has a phone connection on back so forget the phone line. The Italkbb box is a Voip device, so yes you need an internet connection. It doesn't matter where you connect into the internet. Home or hotel while traveling. So it is portable, you can take it with you when traveling around the US or even in China. Once plugged in, friends who call don't even know you've left home as they call your home number and it rings where ever you are connected in the world. It does require an internet connection, so you can't sit in a parking lot or go out walking with the box, but it does have a feature to call a number from your cellphone and use your Italkbb account. Still it is not for those just looking for a long distance service. It is a home phone service replacement.
  16. So it's safe to assume italkBB needs cable, preferably from Verizon? My wife and I both have cell phones through Verizon (1400 minutes..about $80/month, contract lock for atleast another year), Internet (DSL) and home phone from AT&T (formerly Bellsouth) (about $80/month) and we buy onesuite.com (2.2 cents/minute to China) at an average of $25-$30/month. We certainly like the ability for her mama and baba to call us for free via italkBB. Navigated Verizon's website for packages but don't see much savings? Called, but Verizon rep not too helpful. Any suggestions would be appreciated! ITalkbb can be used over DSL, but you would have some quality issues. Nothing too bad, but still very noticeable. You are paying 80+25 or $105 for slow internet, home phone and calls to China. If I were you, I would turn the DSL and home phone into FIOS or cable. Most DSL runs at .765MB, cable and FIOS is 12MB to 20MB. at around 60. So by switching to fast broadband, you could get fast internet, home phone and calls to/from china for around $85. You should save about $20 a month. Cellphone service is a seperate part of Verizon. FIOS is fairly new and not available in all areas, but any service that offers over 12MB download and 2MB up would give good quality with any VoIP.
  17. I had quality problems most of the time. My wife was always complaining about the connection to China. I switched from Comcast to Verizon FIOS. The quality is so much better. Now, we never have a quality issue.
  18. I still have Italkbb.. 24.99 per month. Free calls to USA, Canada, most of Europe and China. Calls to us from China ... FREE!!!! Quality has been very good. My wife stays in touch with her family and friends very easy.
  19. I doubt you will see any change as the freedom of information act pertains to information that is considered public record and made available to the public. You may already file a freedom of information act request using the G-639. You may not use it: The information you seek in denial of a visa is considered personal attached to the beneficairy. No one is allowed acess to this specific information except the beneficiary. This even applies to the petitioner. You will find once she is here, you can't even talk with USCIS about her case unless she is present and gives her consent. Remember, even though you petitioned for her, this is considered her case, not yours. The only possible person who is allowed to access specific information on a case for the beneificiary is their personal representative. This person must be a lawyer, or representative of a religious, charitable or social organization. Meaning you will find many, many road blocks for finding out this information. Bottom line is nothing will change by the President's new order.
  20. No band??? Funny, they played the Star Spangled banner and America the beautiful at Lisa's ceremony, but then it was piped in.... Any way,,, from one time long time traveler to another, yes the journey is finally over. Now your real life can begin. CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!
  21. It depends on the program, what language of OS it is programmed to run on and how it is coded. The first thing to check is under Regional settings make sure the setting for non-Unicode programs is set for Chinese (Simplified - PRC). The second is check the program for a page encoding setting. You want it to be set for Unicode UTF-8. Mozilla Thunderbird is one of those kind of programs you have to tweek on the settings to get Chinese to display properly. If those don't work , make sure the program is allowed to run on English Windows. Programs designed for Chinese Windows will not always run or display correctly on English Windows. You can then see if they have a version made for your OS. Hope this helps.
  22. Infopass is not required. It is available for those that need to ask questions about their case. USCIS used to be hammered everyday with long ass information lines. So to address that problem they now require an infopass to ask information. You can not go to the information window without an infopass. An infopass is basically an appointment just to ask information.
  23. This is true, but with whites slips basically skyrocketing I believe what could have been overlooked in the past is now being scrutinized through a microscope. We also don't know where this new directive could be coming from, but I doubt GUZ is acting on their own. It is probably a mixture of new directives sent from DOS based on the recent case ruling and from the station head because GUZ has a bad face with DOS now. This list is quite good. The best way to deal with any and all red flags is to front load your application. Remember the rules the VO must live by, they can only use any evidence not available to USCIS to deny. This means if you think you have a red flag, provide it and an explanation to USCIS and your app gets to GUZ, then they can not use that against you and your spouse/fiancee. This still doesn't guarantee getting the visa, but success should be a little easier.
