  1. My best friend says I am going to spoil a perfect Chinese wife. He is referring to how well I treat my dog. I bought my Montana home as much for my dog as for me, literally. I bought on a stream so she would always have fresh water available. She has dog beds all over the house for her comfort. She had raw sirloin steak for breakfast this morning. Watching me baby my dog for 8 years now...my friend frequently says that he wants to be reincarnated as my dog. Lately he has expressed concerns that I will spoil my soon-to-be wife and her daughter so that they become demanding rather than content. My dog was so well mannered when I got her than even today, she is better behaved than 99.8% of all dogs. Do you think my luck with my dog will carry over to my wife and daughter? Or will giving my future wife and daughter everything change and spoil them?
  2. OBTW - If you haven't seen the other thread...our application WAS APPROVED...so there is good news for the Spring Festival celebration. :jump:
  3. What??? Not be angry at my government??? Some one has to keep writing them so they know at least one person is paying attention and is concerned about every infringement of personal liberty.
  4. I didn't know that USCIS worked on Sunday Apparently that touch I saw on Friday ended with an application approval! I got the email of the approval at 0915 am Sunday morning. Interestingly, Roger Lin emailed me within an hour of the approval! He has done a wonderful job for Xiaoyuan and me. I guess the real work begins now..... B)
  5. My Sweetie is really busy preparing for my Spring Festival visit. We have a family dinner for the 3 of us on 2/6, then an engagement dinner for the family, then an engagement dinner and clubbing for her friends, and then we go to Guilin for a few days. She's also making me a traditional Chinese jacket to wear at the engagement parties.... The jacket will cost 900 RMB... The dinners cost 1500-2000 RMB/table... The photographer for our "Chinese wedding pictures" costs 988 RMB... My Chinese mother & father asked for a gift of American money... I'm going to be spending some money on this trip. I keep telling her that will are not getting married on this trip because all of the time that we have waited will be lost... I don't know, I think she has plans for us to marry this trip. The frenzy wrapped around this visit reminds me of getting married in a church.
  6. I wrote my gal figuring she will be excited, but she's going to ask the big question: How long now?
  7. I looked at the USCIS site just a few minutes ago and discovered that USCIS touched my I-129F application. What does that mean? There is no additional information on the website and I haven't received an email alert. Does it just mean that someone is now looking at my application? They can approve, deny or request more information. Correct?
  8. Thank you for the explanations, I won't say that I understand...but at least it is a bit clearer...and its connection to saving face is clear.
  9. Hukou, »§¿Ú, is defined by Wenlin as a registered, permanent residence. Before looking it up in Wenlin, I thought that it meant a person was an orphan/child born out of wedlock with no legitimate blood parentage. Is it simply a residency requirement - remotely similar to residency requirements in the US for getting reduced tuition at state universities? There must be more to it than that. I think my original understanding makes the drastic action that this young girl took more understandable in terms of loss of face. Can some one elaborate, please? In any case, it is unfortunate that a promising child would do such a thing.
  10. The law stinks because it was passed and signed into law in the first place! It is a control on the 1st Amendment rights of American men. ...positives... Are there positives? If there is any level of protection for women communicating with American male predators...then I applaud it. ...but we all know better than that, Roger. It is simply another control to be imposed selectively on a small group of people who used to be free. <RANT = ON> Laws are imposed on law abiding citizens because government and law enforcement doesn't have the will or the courage to impose laws on the law breakers. <RANT = OFF> Fortunately, this law appears to be gathering dust - which I did not know and was the reason for the post. However, as long as it exists it is what people in the security business (like myself) would classify as a threat.
  11. I figured it was a non-issue, but I didn't want to be blind-sided. Thanks.
  12. I've read the articles and posts about IMBRA. The law stinks. My question has more to do with whether the fact that I met my gal on chinesekisses.com will come back to bite me in the butt. I doubt that website sent her my criminal record (one speeding ticket a few hours after Nixon lowered the speed limit) and did all of the other stuff that it is supposed to do according to the law. Has IMBRA directly hit you? If so, how? Is there a way to mitigate the problem?
  13. Thanks guys... We are working on a list of discussion topics rather than expectations. I am hoping the discussion will reveal the expectations. The idea about expectations of the US is a great idea. My grandmother came here thinking the streets were paved with gold - literally. ...and she was an English speaker (Irish speaker really ) And unlike most of you, I have the additional concern of her reaction to living in a remote part of the country that is far too populated for me...but probably deserted with her frame of reference. (3675 sq mile/20k people in the county, about 6k in my community when the summer residents return)
  14. The story reminded me of the anti-labor wars in our country. It makes me wonder if China must go through all of the troubles that our country experienced to become the modern society it is today.
  15. It would certainly be nice to celebrate Spring Festival and have our engagement parties for family and friends with the NOA-2 in hand.
  16. My NOA-1 arrived in late August...and I am approaching 170 days with no word of an NOA-2. I called at around 120 days and the woman on the phone told me that they no longer send NOA-2s. Long story short, I think the game has changed, but I do not know how.
  17. I can see it now, you go to have conditional status removed and they inform you that you haven't reached your second anniversary and reschedule you for 3/1/2016. You really might want to think about this one. All they need is a reason. ...yeah, better check the fine print on this one. Reasonably intelligent people would never figure it to be a monkey wrench...but then.....
  18. I figure it is their country so they get to make the rules. Sometimes I wish our politicians and courts would apply some common sense to the first amendment of our constitution (and I spent much of my adult life as successful broadcast and print journalist).
  19. Did someone say par? The exchanged rate on my first trip in 1978 was 1.4 YUAN:1 USD
  20. One world government will equalize all things. There was a post from Roger recently that talked about the rise of China and while the excellent article never said "one world government," it talked about FDR and his planning for world order... And that is not meaning one world government in a paranoid, conspiratorial way... Maybe I'll convert $10k USD into a Chinese CD while I am there at Spring Festival.
  21. After ice fishing yesterday, my friend an I had toddy and a chat. He suggested that my gal & I make lists of what we expect from each other. It sounds like a smart thing to do, if only to highlight our misunderstanding of each other's cultural beliefs. Your thoughts?
  22. Thank you for posting the article. >>>The question I get is: why china hasn't risen sooner? It is probably as simple as Mao being a necessary, evolutionary step for the country.
  23. ...just some of the "Yes Dear" comments in some of the threads tickled my funny bone. We must all have something in common because from the tone of your posts - every one of you is wrapped around your gal's finger...just like me......
