1. Hi Ron,

I have made 2 x 4 labels for letters and packages.  Loving Candle edited the Chinese characters in MS-Word and emailed me the document.  I added the English version.  I put them into MS-Word here and made standard address label sheets.  These work for me every time.

BTW, when sending anything important I use EMS and I never, ever send cash or jewelry or anything like that.  EMS is separate corporation that is deployed world-wide and has contracts with all the PT&T's in the host countries.

When I send an EMS box I put these labels on ALL the edges and front and back.  I believe in the MTV model in this instance.  "Too much is always enough".

    -James

    195346

Yep, I can attest to EMS's reliability.

You can track your envelope/package too.

I've used them numerous times and they're

cheaper and just as reliable as FedEx & the other couriers.

As for addresses, I just use Pin Yin and never had a problem.

No JPEG, or fancy labeling necessary.

Sending stuff to the US Consulate was also

done with pinyin or English. No problems.

  2. Hey all,

My wife were just reading through posts and she is dying to here some opinions on whether or not there will definitely be a translator available for the interview.

We only communicate in Chinese and she is really starting to worry about having to handle it in English.

Anybody have a concrete answer on this?

    nate

    194953

If your wife greets the VO in Chinese, they know what to do.

But if they insist on asking in English, all she has to say, is:

" I only speak a little English. Please interview me in Chinese/Cantonese"

For the record, my wife and I situation is similar to you i.e. we

speak mainly Chinese. And my wife was going interview in Chinese.

But she reneged because she felt confident seeing a nice blond dude VO

    She passed...

  3. My SO is planning on flying from NE China to Cincinnati next month.

Her port of entry will be either LAX, SFO, Chicago or New York City one of 3 airports there. Then coming to Cincinnati,Ohio. (There is no direct flight from China to Cincinnati.)

How much time should we allow for between flight changes for customs and immigration?

    194222

In my book, better to overestimate than to underestimate

    when it comes to flying.

If you underestimate, there goes your connection,

    and $200 flight.

If you overestimate, at least, she'll have time to chill out

at the gate and observe American culture for a few hours

    So go for 3 hours.

  4. My SO passed her interview on Feb 22.  She is here in USA now. She said the interview lasted about 2 minutes, although she was waiting for 5 hours.  I could not believe how fast POE was at Newark last evening.

    194627

Congratulations and welcome to USA

Newark airport rocks on a nice weekday.

But the weekends can get very slow.

I missed a connection once because of the

long lines in customs and immigration.

  5. Congratulations!

     :redblob:

BTW: I have been fascinated by your avatar.  Why wouldn't the other bear(?) respond to the slaps and let it continue like that?  The other day Randy made it symmetric. :D

    Wish you happy life together!

    194600

It's not a bear....it's Pikachu from the Pokemon world

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pikachu

The slap-happy Pikachu reminds me of Government agencies (GUZ,DOS, USCIS, etc) and the one getting slapped around.....you guessed it,

    all of us poor souls.

  6. Thank you brothers and sisters at Candle and 001.

My SO received her passport with Immigrant Visa this morning at Junyuan post office.

She was interviewed by a blond dude on 2/27/2006.

He greeted her in Chinese, but my wife replied in English.

So the rest of the interview was done in English.

Initially, she was not sure about conducting the interview in English.

I passed on all your advice and told her she needs to practise through the list of possible interview questions. (I gave her both English & Chinese versions)

    She was asked:

    1) What does your husband do?

    2) Where is he working?

    3) When were you married?

    4) Show me some photos.

    Then the VO said, "Congratulations".

She was surprised it was so short.

She thought her "Kithchen Sink" was a bit too much to carry

until she saw another girl in the consulate carrying twice

    as much

It rained most days in Guangzhou, so if any of you are headed

there, don't forget to bring an unbrella or rain coat. And a big

plastic bag for the "Kitchen Sink" of documents & stuff.

    My timeline is:

    P3 to GUZ 9/14/05

    Eligible for interview 9/23/05

    Interview date set 1/13/06

    P4 received 1/22/06

    Interview 2/27/06

    Immigrant Visa 3/1/06

She stayed one night with the Yang's above the consulate building.

    They're very nice and informative.

Thanks again and God bless you all.

  7. I can add another positive experience about staying at the above place.  My SO did, and for only 150 RMB per night during the trade show (late October).  Very very close to the consulate.

All visa interview for K1, K3, CR1 etc are held at

the US Consulate in Guangzhou i.e. a 24 hour train ride from Beijing.

  8. Well I call the DOS today and am expecting the same asnwer i get for the past 12 weeks.  She starts our saying the case is still pending...But interview date of June 19th. Umm June 19th?  Are you sure it is JUNE 19?  I practialy spell it out.  She says yes and I note some attitude in her osama bin laden accented voice.  I say that dont make sense, an interveiw 4 months out?  She comes back with, "that is all you need to know!"  Talk about seeing RED!  I tried my damndest to get in that phone and choke that bitch!  Anyway, I calm down and realize that this is the same person that keeps telling me to call the number in china because they need to talk to me.

So my wife calls me before she goes to bed, as always.  I tell her what happen and she say we got interview that is all that matter, maybe some time away but is ok.  We are together in 3 days, I leave thurs morn on my 3rd trip, and then not much longer after that I come to you.  I go from ready to kill and torture and kill some more to just smiling at this sweet woman's outlook.

Has anyone else heard of this, interview 4 months away?  I already plan on calling tomorrow to get a differnet answer.  Oh they also siad the p4 mailed out on friday.

    194041

    If it's June, it's June...

When you call DOS, remember to ask them to identify

themselves and then log it down.

I've gotten Jackie, Barbara, Lauren, Raquel, Jennifer and Sharon.

  9. Hi guys and ladys here,

I dont know what problem I am having now, but seems these few days I have no more patience :D I am really tired of and cant stand waiting no more. I have told my husband about it on the phone for 2 times, last friday and this morning. I know he tried his best and done everything he could do, write letter to congesswoman and senator. I should not have complained that to him, but I dont know why I still complain and complain ;)  I complained i dont like GZ always make our waiting longer, I complained GZ always gave us canned response. I complained why marriage visa takes much longer than fiancee visa, I complained how hard to be a single mother even though her status is married ........... Everything, everything I complained everything. I know right now I am not good on my period. I tried to behave good, but failed. I had terrible last night, I could not fall asleep, too much blood, at that time  I just wish my husband was here and gave me a cup of water, but he is not here, he is too far away. My body was painful, at that time I got a crazy idea I should not be alive, I  should die.  Maybe my period made me depression?? Why I have to experience this??I just want to have a normal marriage life!!! Do I asked too much???  I am married for a year and half now, we are still apart  now I am tired and exhausted mentally and physically. My husband said I have choice, be more patient or give up. He told me he has no choice, and he has to be paitent as he loves me so much. Do I love him?? Yes I do, but why i cant stand waiting and he can?  He loves me more than I love him?? Is there anyone had the hardest time during waiting this damn visa? how you guys here to go through it? share your experience please.

    193901

You know...whenever I hear my wife cry over the phone or

see her cry on web camera, it makes me very very sorry that we are

stuck on two opposite sides of the Earth. I get very depressed and unhappy and feel guilty for marrying and asking her to wait.

She knows I love her and I know I love her but

sometimes, I wish we were not married, so that

there is no pain of waiting and waiting and waiting.

But when I think about our life without being married to

each other, then I realized our lives would be empty.

So I just accept the long wait as a necessary step

    to get a US Visa.

    193951

exactly. My husband said the same words to me that when he saw me or hear my cry, he felt very very sorry, unhappy, helpless, and guilty for let me waiting waiting for this visa.

thanks guys here, I feel much better now. I know life is not so easy for everyone. Once we chose our life, we should stick to it.

    193955

Whenever I told my wife I loved her, many times she will reply:

Wo bu jue de... (I don't feel it) ;)

That was depressing to hear over the phone,

but I know she is just telling me what she feels.

To me, she very honest and also vulnerable so that's

    why I married her :(

  11. My wife and I decided that we wanted to start saving for our future in a different currency, the Chinese RMB.  From what I've read in the news and from my gut feeling, I think that the RMB will rise in value in the near future.

However, we are living in the U.S.  Is there a way to save my funds in RMB?

    193773

We did this but it wasn't easy. We wanted to transfer money to China ahead of our trip there this year when we plan to buy a "house" ( for everyones general info I have finally figured out this "house" thing. In China a house is an apartment and a villa is a house). My wife has a friend who works in the Bank of China in her hometown in Hunan. She was able to open an account there by sending copies of her ID card. Then we wire transfered the money from our bank. But they will not change the money from $ to RMB without you being there to do it. So my wife's father had to go the bank and they let him make the change. He also had to go back many times because they limit how much you can change at one time. .. Just our experience... :D Good Luck

    193783

What was the exchange rate given to you for the

conversion from US$ to RMB at the Bank of China?

  12. :greenblob:  :greenblob:  :greenblob:  Yesterday, I called DOS with my normal Friday call...to check on the status of my wife's case. I was told that my wife's P-4 was sent out on Feb. 24 and she should receive it in the next few days.

They also told me my SO's interview date...which is June 9,2006. I can't understand Guz's logic in a long time between P-4 and interview...but my wife and I are very happy to finally get our interview date. :redblob:  :redblob:  :redblob:

    193637

Congrats on getting an interview date.

It's just a bit far off in the Summer when

airfare is expensive....but that's GUZ for you :D

  13. I receive this letter from immigration to provide the exact same material that I provided when I sent the application  .  I called and ask why and if there was a reason for them to request for the same material such as passport photos, proof like plane tickets, photos together, etc.... and they couldn't tell me.  The guy on the other line just say to send what they ask and he doesn't know why.  I just want to know if I sent the same material will I have the same problem but he still doesn't know.  Such a BS from immigration

This is after waiting for 4 months.  SO is so frustrate with this since she have to take new passport photo and now wondering if this will ever get done!

    193113

I've been down the RFE trail...

It's going to take at least 1 month after you send your

reply before they take a look at your file again because

they send all files to an offsite storage facility.

So hurry up and reply and stop complaining !

  14. Dear all,

I emailed the Consulate yesterday to confirm that they had received my new address, and they emailed back saying that they have, and that I an interview date would be set soon.  I took this as incredible news and so called my wife to tell her.  The result being that she had just received a package with our interview date!  Mar 9th!

This is great news, but now we are thinking about how to tackle this interview.  First off, my situtation is different than most here as I live in China and have since 2000.  We are applying for the CR-1 visa.  Here are some other special details:

    1.  I have been working a steady job here in China since the beginning of 2004.  In light of this I am not sure how to handle the AOS stuff.  I haven't worked in the US since 2000 and so I have no recent tax records or anything like that.  I haven't worked or done anything there to pay tax!  I have, however, been paying tax here for the past few years.  How would this reflect on my AOS?

    2.  Our son was born last June.  He is now 8 months old and already has his American passport.  I am thinking that this will help a ton in validating the relationship between my wife and I.

    3.  My wife doesn't really speak English, but I speak Chinese.  I have heard other people needed to prepare videos and stuff like that.  Does anybody have a definite bit of info on this?  We also have joint property here in China, lots of home movies that we have taken with our son, and tons of pics.

    4.  We are planning to head to the states after we get the visa, but then come back to China after a month or so (as soon as we can get the process started in the states) as my work and our house are here (shenzhen specifically).  I've heard this isn't a problem...again, im not sure.

ok...im so excited that we are going to have a chance to go back.  I personally haven't been back in the states for about 3 years and I am ready to take a break from China's little annoyances.

Thanks all and im happy the wait is finally over.  Congrats to all those who have received their p4s and let me know if anybody is going to be in Guangzhou around Mar 9th as I will certainly be there.

    nate

    193146

    Congrats on P4!!

All US citizens must file a tax return....irregardless of where you reside

or whether you are earning an income in USA.

As for proof of ability to communicate, you should make a VHS tape

(in NTSC system) recording of you and your wife chatting in Chinese.

    About 5-10 minutes long.

    Good luck!

  15. Ying just received a letter yesterday from the USCIS saying our I-485 petition was denied.  The letter, dated Jan 25, was postmarked Feb 14th and stated that they had sent us a letter several months ago asking for more evidence and we had failed to respond in time.  It also says "There is no appeal to this decision", but that we can file a motion to reconsider within 33 days of the date of the notice (6 days from now) if we send in $385.

We never recieved any letter requesting more evidence, and have no idea what they need.  She went to her biometrics appointment months ago and there was no problem with that.  Ying has been checking the mailbox every day for many months expecting her interview appointment.  If we HAD received a letter asking for something, we would have responded immediately.

Has anybody had to deal with this?  Does it means she may have to leave the US?  Ying is very upset; any advice would be appreciated.

    192191

From what you wrote, the USCIS sent you a RFE and the 12 weeks

to respond to the RFE has lapsed.

If you need more info, please check out:

    http://tinyurl.com/f665x

I assume your I-485 was filed at Vermont?

So go through the Vermont thread for I-485 issues

and search for denied or motion to deny or NOID.

If you need legal assistance, call Sharryn Ross in Boston,

she did 2 of my friends' Green Card (UK & China) and she

    is very competent:

    http://www.bostonimmigrationattorney.com/staff.html

  16. It's quite simple really- there's

    a consulate/interview fingerprint

    an enter the country fingerprint

    an AOS/biometric fingerprint

    an EAD fingerprint

    an AP fingerprint

    an ID/DL card fingerprint

and a few missing/undefined fingerprints so they can charge you $$$ and beef up their account balances!

And I would be willing to bet any amount of money that if a different set of prints showed up anywhere in any of these processes, it would go totally unnoticed. Does anyone really believe they check each set of prints each step of the way to see if they are the same as the last set?!?!? :o

    185266

I'll bet that the more prints they take,

means they can report that productivity is up

at the DHS -- meaning they're doing a great

job protecting the good citizens of USA. :o

  17. Hey everybody! Im seeking a CR-1 visa for my wife Elf and we did a DCF in November. Today we are returning the complete P3 packet (DS-230 part 1 and the OF-169 checklist). From looking at other people's timelines, it takes about 4 months to get the P4 back and have an interview date set which is usually a month later. I must be back in the US by June 10th to take a teacher's qualification test. I cant take it online, at a later date, etc.

Here's my question: in your personal opinion, do you think it is possible for us to get the P4, take the interview and get the visa BEFORE June 10th? Will the embassy take our situation into consideration i.e. can they set an earlier interview date or anything like that? If the interview date is after June 10th, can Elf legally enter the USA by herself? Obviously we desperately want to go home together but I MUST take this test to get the job.

    184489

    Dude,

You might get it by June, but if not,

    then Elf enters USA alone.

    It's as simple as that...

because without a job, things are going to get expensive

    when Elf comes over

  18. Sorry about being so late with this, but as promised......

Ying said she got to the consulate early in the morning.  Once there and having sworn the oath she went to a room to wait for her interview.  Once her number was called she went up to a window with an Asian woman (Korean?).

She asked Ying if she had any pictures. Ying handed her the photo album.

As she looked at the pictures she asked Ying the following questions.

    1) How did you meet? (Internet on AFF)

    2) When did you get married? (June 24, 2004)

    3) How many times did he come to China? (Once, but work did not allow for another visit.)

    4) How long did he stay? (10 days)

    5) Did he have any children? (no)

    6) Do you have any children? (said she was sorry when learned of Peter's recent death.)

She then asked for Ying's passport and said she passed.

Ying had idea her decision was already made because before she even looked at the pictures she already had the red slip of paper all ready to hand her.

The rest as we say is history.

    180058

Very useful info dude, thank you and best to y'all
