China gymnastics gets too much bad rap!
jim_julian replied to spacebar's topic in The Middle Kingdom - 中国
Damn near ... as I recall he has size 14 feet, not really huge, BUT his ankles flex considerably more than the normal human making them extra efficient flippers. Then there's that wingspan of his ... -
Not Marrying in China
jim_julian replied to Jerry & xiaomin's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
We did a wedding banquet right after we got the K-1 visa in her passport. http://jjulian.org/page3/page20/files/page20-1010-thumb.jpg It was loads of fun ... lunch and dinner for 160 relatives. To her family it was just the same as getting married. (Just don't go to the civil office and register a marriage because that violates the K-1) With many many red envelopes we even did a little better than break even on the cost. -

Then there's the age issue on the Chinese women's gymnastics team. I am quite sure that they are under age ... why? 1. Sources like this are hard to refute. 2. Countries do this ... I have personal knowledge. I had an ongoing business relationship with a moderately high ranking royal in an unnamed country. This guy's hobby was to run the youth soccer program and specifically the select national teams that competed internationally. He was always fielding boys 1, 2, or even 3 years older than the maximum age for a particular bracket. The boys were issued passports with false birth dates by that country's official passport agency. In my opinion, it is very likely that China has issued false passports for their child gymnasts. -

... and they even have height, weight, and age standards for Chinese flight attendants; just like the good old days .... sigh ... -
She left early this morning. At this moment she should have taken in her passports. The letter she received stated that she needed to do this on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday between 2 & 3 PM. That seems to be a very narrow window. I wonder if anyone else has received such instructions...? Yep, Chen Chen had the same deal.

With the possible exception of the network fascination with men's beach volleyball (ugh!), the Olympic coverage has been OK in my view. They sure to save the best events for last ... don't they ...

The Mon-Wed, 2-3PM is very standard. The requested material is just dropped off at an admin window. Only takes a minute; no questions. This is the procedure that was used to issue our K-2 FTJ visa.

Tonoue .... several things ... QiuQiu may see some pretty extreme advice/opinion etc on 001, the Chinese counterpart to CFL. These thoughts will be coming from other Chinese women. It seems to be a cultural trait that she will tend to give these great weight even though you may offer very logical (to you) refutation of the point under discussion. Expect this. Don't be upset by it. Don't argue too much and after you are right a few times she will begin to give your thoughts more weight. Look at you case from the VO's viewpoint. - Are you financially secure? Much less chance that this is fraud. - Can you provide good relationship evidence? The most powerful here seems to be visits with tickets you paid for, documented, and photos of you an QiuQiu under a variety of circumstances including, if possible, with her family. - You were married to a foreign national but you didn't sponsor her for an immigration visa so it doesn't look like you have been "used" to get visas before. - All sorts of little things: do you have a career, are you well educated, do you dress nicely ... others here may squawk about me mentioning these but it all builds an impression. It's the whole picture that is important. If you're OK on the points I ticked off above I wouldn't worry about how soon after divorce, previous wife, age difference, etc. Good luck ... and welcome to CFL.

Amen brother! -
I thought ACH was helpful. The guy spent some time with me going over K-2 FTJ procedures. But that was a couple of years ago ...

Question about financial things
jim_julian replied to JustinandSeiby's topic in General Visa Discussion & First Steps
Justin, welcome aboard ... and one more point to add to Dave's ... Regarding your friends who have married citizen's of other countries, don't rely 100% on them as China and the Guangzhou process is in some aspects unique and tougher than bringing a loved one from other countries. CFL and Visa Journey are your best resources. We appreciate it that you search the site and look at the FAQs but in the end there are no stupid questions so don't hesitate to ask. -
Relative of US Olympic coach killed in Beijing
jim_julian replied to hakkamike's topic in The Middle Kingdom - 中国
So far the US media seems to be taking a balanced view ... not using this unfortunate event to buttress China bashing. Ditto for the President in his public statement. -
Changing a first name during AOS was not a problem for us. I think the USCIS person you spoke to is inventing "rules". Our K2 daughter changed her first and last names during the AOS process. If you state recognizes common law name changes (most states, including California, do) then you just need to provide a simple declaration changing her name. This is perfectly acceptable to the federal government. No lawyers; no court. If you want an example e-mail me and I will send one to you. If you ask a lawyer they'll tell you you need lawyers and a court ... I wonder why they say that $$$$$$$$?

Yes Xiao Yang and his family are great ... very consistent.

Dennis ... it's Major.

Maxal ... that would be the US Consulate in Chengdu. I would e-mail them to make sure they can provide the certificate you require. Chengdu is about 165 miles from Chongqing as the crow flies and not a minor trip.

Don't know but I have a hard time thinking that the USG would view it as a positive.
