  1. Two more sites that I might add: Shanghaiexpat.com bejingexpat.com Shanghaiexpat is substantially larger. Unfortunately, the server is not the speediest in the world. I would point out that this particular site covers Jobs, want ad's (Cars, apts, jobs, nannies, etc.), personal realtionships, culture, open forum discussion, Culture issues and questions, and a myriad of problems that people have encountered, and were able to solve and/or recieve advice. There is a lot of sound information there. Most of the contributors are either British and/or US. Best of luck with your dreams
  2. Lumatt, I heartily agree with Carl, "Warpedbored." A while back, he posted the hyperlink for Aimhigh.com. You can use CL search engine, and find it under "hand translators," I believe. My circumstances are substantially different that yours. Alice speaks very good english, but at times can become "hung up" on complex or compound meaning words. I speak some Mandarian. Unfortunately, there are times when we aren't able to get a full meaning of a word, it's impact, or clearly understand what the other is thinking and/or meaning. I used Carl's hyperlink, and have purchased two translators. Alice has one, I have the other. When we call each other, and we have problems properly expressing what we are thinking, both of us can translate then and there. It cuts out a lot of misunderstandings. I would also suggest if you haven't done it yet, and you're talking with you fiancee in China. Go to www.onesuite.com. Phone costs are substantially the best available, very clear signal, printable records for the VO (to show realtionship). With the translators, if you have a voice function you can play into speaker of phone of the Chinese expression for your finacee. Onesuite.com, and the hand translators was some of the best advice Carl has placed on this board. However, he has a lot more sage advice to offer. Thank you Carl! I should add that aimhigh.com has the most comparable rates compared to other translators. You will get a lot more "bang for your buck." Good Luck
  3. Thanks to all for the information and fast response. It seems like a better idea to but here, and insure that I get a good converter for use in her home. Hopefully, I won't have the same experiences that "Shosetsuin" had. Besides, I didn't really relish the thought of explaining to Alice why I couldn't or didn't bring a good quality cordless telephone to her. Most especially since we talk very frequently and at great length. She enjoys the thought of laying down on her bed and being comfortable while conversing with me. She is tired of just sitting on the couch talking. Again, thank you
  4. Myself, past member of US Army, former Postal Manager of Portland P&DC. Returned to school with intrest in Pre-med, and later changed my course study to higher paying career field in Non Destructive Testing. Eventually desire to settle in China. My better half, Alice, is a clerk with the People's Republic of China Agriculture Bureau, Chengdu Office
  5. I'm preparing to return to Chengdu China 15 Dec. My fiancee Alice wishes to have a cordless home telephone brought from the US to Chengdu. I have three questions. 1. Is the power source compatible from US to China? The one that I use in US is 110V. However, I'm not sure about China home wall outlets. I have seen 110V and also 220V. 2. Is the male jack end of the US telephone, compatible to female ends in China. 3. The telephone I'm looking at will have 5.8 Gigaherz. Will this effect Chinese communications or other radio frequency signals? Thank you in advance
  6. Alex, Use search engine (Google) search for Dave's English Cafe. There are numerous postings and forums for English speaker's to teach throughout the Orient. This includes Taiwan, China, Vietnam, S Korea. Not much in the way for Vietnam, Mynmar, or Cambodia. There is also a forum where many of the instrustors post their experiences with many diffrent schools throughout China. They will also give you the lowdown and horror stories they have experienced. I'm sure that some of the stories are exagerrated. However, some of the stories I'm sure are true. Good Luck
