My sweet Jiening has picked me up frfom the airport in Macau a couple of times. The visa is easy to get, takes about two weeks to get it from the customs office in Zhongshan and it goes in the black passport, not the red international one. They do accept HKD or Patacas, but I don't believe that RMB is accepted there. I could be wrong. Incidently, EVA airways has daily flights into Macau from a number of US airports at very reasonable prices. Check Yahoo Travel.

The border crossing typically takes about an hour.

I note that your SO is from Guangxi, she therefore can not freely travel to Macau or Hongkong unless she's gonna take a flight in Macau airport-meaning she's allowed to stay over there for 7 days with K1 visa and a flight ticket/reservation paper which states it takes off at the airport within the 7 days time frame .

HK and Macau both returned to the mainland since 1997 and 1999. almost all stores/shops there now accept RMB and there are plenty of currency exchange bureaus in the main streets, pretty handy.

hope that helps.

The one Phil mentioned (the black(actually is dark blue) passport) is a HK/Macau special passport for people who have Guangdong/Beijing/Shanghai ID or Hukou).

Rosey is right. Only certain cities make it easy. My husband is in HK now, using his BJ hukou to get a week pass (takes 7 days). Though she can always check with local PSB to see if there are any conditions.

I don't know about Macau (oh, I am sooo Macau'd out, that's ALL we are editing for the news these days, the "fifth anniversary of its return to China"), but in HK you can pay in RMB almost everywhere and exchange as much and often as you like. Mainland money is very welcome.

I went to Macau a few months ago. As an american citizen I had no trouble at all getting there. No visa is required and I took the ferry from Shenzhen. The trip took about an hour and it cost 100rmb if I remember correctly. It also only took about 10 minutes getting through customs. My wife(chinese citizen) however, couldn't make the trip without a visa, which she had to get from her home town where her hukou is.

Money exchange is not a problem at all as several places do accept rmb. Also you can go to one of the several casinos there. They can exchange many different currencies into HK$ or patacas.

Hope you have a good time.

The above info about the visa (permit actually, to be more accurate) to Macau is correct. A permit is needed for mainland China ppl to visit HK/Macau.

HKD and RMB are both accepted in Macau. The official exchange rate between Macau dollar and RMB is 1:1.04. If you use RMB in shops, the rate is higher. I saw 1:1.08 at a book shop. If you use HKD in Macau, the rate is 1:1, though officially HKD is "higher" than Macau Dollar. Actually you can exchange currency at the bank of China. Most coaches from GZ to Macau stop at the Bank of China. It's convenient to convert money there, and no extra charge. You can also withdraw RMB from the ATMs labelled "yin lian".

We stayed at the "New Century Hotel" when we were visiting Macau in Sep. It was a nice place and we really enjoyed the cuisine and snacks in Macau. I had planned to visit Macau again with a friend during Xmas time, but later decided that I would spend the "big days" with my honey on line. :o

Thanks everyone that the answer I was looking for. Same req with HK.

It really sucks when you think about it... Just because your NOT from Beijing, Shanghai or Guangdong you have to do extra work to visit HK or Macau.

Meanwhile she owns a business with an equal salary as many from those areas listed.

Oh well... Kunming is looking better everyday.
