Jon's right about the safety record of China Airlines.. 

 

Although it must have improved in the last several years, since I haven't heard of any problems..  in the past it had some spectacular mishaps..  Including one that amazingly, wasn't so bad.  They landed one plane upside down during bad weather in Hong Kong. 

 

There is a website about air disasters, that has vidio and audio footage of various plane crashes --- and they have footage of this landing (if you can call it that), sorry I don't remember the name of the site --- but its an easy Goggle --- unfortunately it is a long download on dial-up with a slow computer like mine --- so I had to cut it off long before the "touch down"

Yes, China Airlines is quite horrid in terms of their service and safety record.

 

Do remember, that China Airlines is also a chinese taipai held company, and for that reason, I refuse to give them any service.

 

However, Air China, has a safety record which is better than all major airlines in the US, and that they also a mainland owned company, and as their premier one for foreigners, tend to get a lot of modern equipment and service.

Went through there in Sept both going to my wonderful wife and coming home without her.. (hopefully change that soon). Its an easy airport, comfortable with an electronics room downstairs if you want to get online, etc. My advice, hit the floor running to the security checkpoint.. hahahahhaa.. just kidding. Have a great trip..

I've also been through that airport. I had a several hour layover there, very nice airport.

Last time I went through Narita they had free sample shots of whiskey at one of the shops. :-P

 

Also nice to pickup some of those "minty" eye drops for those long flights to help refresh your eyes.

 

I have been through Narita about 4 or 5 times and never had any problems. Although coming back to the US they do random carry on searches on the jetway that slow things down a bit.

Carry on Hmmm hope they don't confiscate my Food Supply for the 13 hour flight back. Going to be carrying a lot of Wifes Clothes back this trip. Things I am taking over is what I'm worried about.

Well last time I left Beijing, I had some cola to carry on, they made me open the cans so he can smell them ( it was a sealed can, did I mention this??)

So needless to say I just dumped them out.

Not sure what problems they have had, but I thought it was kinda weird.

I have been thru Narita a few time for flight changes - no issues, but it seems to always be be changing. Stayed the once on business. As oregenknl mentioned Japan is very expensive. I don't think I will go there as tourist - cannot afford it.

I have also flied through Narita a few times, and enjoyed it, off plane, go back through security, then up to the lounge(so called), and reboarded, but I was flying NW, staying within their bounds. Soon doing again
