Randy W
The cave paintings of Dunhuang, a former Silk Road outpost in northwestern China, are spectacular to behold. Bordered on all sides by the windswept desert, these centuries-old masterworks stand testament to the faith and fears of the traders who passed through Dunhuang. But there was another treasure hidden in Dunhuang: its manuscripts. In 1900, the Taoist monk Wang Yuanlu, a resident of Dunhuang’s Mogao Grottoes, stumbled upon a concealed cave while clearing away accumulated sand. This hidden repository — now known as the Library Cave — yielded over 70,000 artifacts, including Buddhist scriptures, documents, embroideries, silk paintings, and ceremonial objects dating from the fourth to the eleventh centuries. Hao Chunwen has spent years trying to decode the thousands of manuscripts uncovered in Dunhuang. Now he wants to involve scholars from other fields in the work. During the recent World Conference on China Studies, Hao spoke to Sixth Tone about the current state of Dunhuang studies, the challenges facing the field, and what makes these manuscripts so unique. The interview has been edited for brevity and clarity. It has the highest piers of all covered bridges in China. The bridge spans across the Longchuan River, which has its source in Gaoligong Mountain and its large volume accumulates upon entering Gaoqiao Canyon. Du Fuguang, vice mayor of Jietou Town, explained that "during the rainy seasons, the rapid stream of the Longchuan River dashes against the cliffs of Gaoqiao Gorge, and as a result the surface of the cliff walls are riddled with abrasions. Old people say this is a sign of a dragon's paw, and the dragon tries to destroy the Gaoqiao bridge but fails. Randy W
ONLY IN CHANGBAISHAN If the sight of the natural stunning beauty of rimes and thrill of winter rafting intrigue you, go to Changbaishan because it is the only place in China where one can do both along the so-called “never-freezing river”. ✅ JILIN’S RIME is one of China’s four natural wonders. ❄️ According to locals, elsewhere, the formation of rime is a rare occurrence, but the unique environmental conditions in Jilin make it possible. They even celebrate Jilin Rime with an annual event. So why is the river “never-freezing” and how are rimes formed? The Songhua River stays warm because of the Fengman Hydropower Station located upstream. The warm water creates vapor in the air, which condenses into fog as it cools. The water in the fog then freezes as it hits the cold winter air.😶🌫️ ✅ Locals say that, at the time of our WINTER RAFTING, the temperature dropped to -30C. We stopped along the way to look closely at the rime, snow and ice so it took us over an hour to reach the end of the 3-kilometer never-freezing river. 🥶 From 2021 to (first few days of)2023, we have so far seen three of China’s four natural wonders - Jilin’s rime, the Yangtze’s Three Gorges and Guilin's karst and rivers. 🥰 Link to comment
