Fanjingshan is a Chinese word, which means "Buddhist tranquility." So basically it has been a holy site for Buddhists since the Tang Dynasty. High up in China's Wuling Mountains sits two Buddhist temples: The Temple of the Buddha and Maitreya Temple. It is located on the “Red Clouds Golden Summit or Golden Peak” on Fanjingshan Mountain (also known as Mount Fanjing), the highest point of the Wuling Mountains in southwestern China. It ranges in altitude between 500 metres and 2,570 metres above sea level, favouring highly diverse types of vegetation and relief. It became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018. The entire region has some unusual rock formations and rich biodiversity, which makes the place a nature lover’s dream!

During the 16th century, the Bozhou rebellion (a Miao uprising that occurred in Guizhou and spread to Sichuan and Huguang) resulted in various Buddhist temples being destroyed in the Fanjingshan region. After the rebellion was suppressed, the Wanli Emperor (14th Emperor of the Ming dynasty) ordered the reconstruction of the Golden Peak with the Temple of the Buddha & Maitreya Temple. The Temple of the Buddha is dedicated to the worship of Sakiymuni, representing the present, whilst the Maitreya temple represents the future. Both were built on a vertical pinnacle consisting of two peaks, connected by a stone bridge that traverses a large crevice called the gold sword gorge. This natural wonder can be reached via a staircase of 8,888 steps, or via cable car.

🏯 The Temple of Laojun Mountain, also known as Jin Temple, is located in Luoyang, Henan province. It holds significant importance in Taoist heritage as it served as a refuge for Laozi, the founder of Taoism.
🌄 Standing at 2,217 meters, the mountain offers breath-taking views of the surrounding area. Every year on April 9th, Taoist pilgrims make a ritualistic climb up the mountain to the shrine on their knees🧎‍♂️🧎‍♀️, making the pilgrimage a monumental part of Taoist tradition.

Lijing Gate - Main Gate of Ancient #Luoyang
Built around 1,400 years ago, Lijing Gate serves as the west gate of the old city of Luoyang. As a key landmark of Luoyang, #Lijing Gate is celebrated as the “preeminent tower in the Central Plain and primary gate of Luoyang”. It features an embrasured watchtower, a gate tower and an inner fortification surrounded by a moat. This finely structured gate aptly represents the city gates in Chinese history. It boasts towering walls and formidable fortifications, which give visitors a feel of the ancient city of Luoyang in the imperial age. #ancientcapitalcity #Luoyang #culturalrelics #historyteller #ancientbuildings #HenanWhereChinaBegan

Jilong Castle Hotel Guizhou China | Замок Жилонг отель, Гуйчжоу, Китай
Jilong Castle is a hotel located in the center of a lake in China's Guizhou province, and looks like it's been plucked straight out of a fairytale.

Not much is known about the Jilong Castle Country Club, apart from the fact that its is a four-star hotel. Back in 2018, Chinese news outlet Global Times reported that one night at the fairytale castle cost only 262 yuan ($40).

A few feet away, her husband captures the entire process on an old iPhone. Once the film is edited, the couple will upload it for their more than 700,000 followers on streaming platforms like Xigua Video and Douyin, the version of TikTok accessible on the Chinese mainland.

Unlike some of China’s earliest and best-known rural vloggers, including Li Ziqi and Dianxi Xiaoge, Bamei’s videos depict the countryside as a land of hard, unglamorous, yet fulfilling work. Gone are the elegant traditional attire and gracefully choreographed shots of artisanal agriculture; no professional video team helps shoot or edit their work. This is rural China as hundreds of millions of Chinese experience it every day.

26 Years of Growth: Shanghai Then and Now

from the Atlantic

original.gif

Quote

Reuters photographer Carlos Barria recently spent time in Shanghai, China, the fastest-growing city in the world. A week ago, he took this amazing shot, recreating the same framing and perspective as a photograph taken in 1987, showing what a difference 26 years can make. The setting is Shanghai's financial district of Pudong, dominated by the Oriental Pearl Tower at left, and the new 125-story Shanghai Tower, China's tallest building and the world's second tallest skyscraper, at 632 meters (2,073 ft) high, scheduled to finish by the end of 2014. Shanghai, the largest city by population in the world, has been growing at a rate of about 10 percent a year the past 20 years, and now is home to 23.5 million people -- nearly double what it was back in 1987. This entry is focused on this single photo pairing, with several ways to compare the two.
