MikeandRong
I've been to the real Harbin Ice Show and it's really cold, minus 25 F. Had to keep the camera batteries next to my chest as they would only work for about 5 minutes before going bad. It is quite the sight to see, espically at night with all the colored lights lighting up the different structures. Walking up the different ice stairs of some of the buildings was challenging too. The one place that was not as crowded as any other attraction I went to in China. Link to comment

Major Snow (Chinese, 大雪), the 21st solar term of the year, begins this year on Dec. 7 and ends on Dec. 20. During such period, the snow in northern China becomes heavy and begins to accumulate on the ground. The temperature drops significantly. The 24 solar terms, based on the sun's position in the zodiac, were created by farmers in ancient China to guide agricultural affairs and farming activities. They reflect the changes in climate, natural phenomena, agricultural production, and people’s daily life, including clothing, food, housing, and transportation. Playing important roles and greatly influencing people's basic needs, they still work well nowadays. Recently, China's 24 solar terms, considered to be the country's fifth great invention, were added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage Last year's vs. This Year's on Facebook - CCTV - https://www.facebook.com/cctvcom/posts/10156040547304759 China Pictorial - https://www.facebook.com/ChinaPic/posts/1399300206862031 Edited December 26, 2020 by Randy W (see edit history) 1 Link to comment

Randy W
A fascinating story of the farmers from nearby villages who work for the festival in their off-season - from the Sixth Tone. An interesting video that's in the article, but you can watch here - http://video1.sixthtone.com/video/5/0/149.mp4 The Farmers Who Carve Frozen Rivers for the Harbin Ice Festival Meet the men behind the building blocks for China’s biggest winter wonderland. Quote Most haven't been to the festival in years, since the tickets are "too expensive", at ¥330, or around $50USD. The festival apparently got its start from farmers who were suddenly idled by the oncoming winter, but were able to redirect their labor to carving large blocks of ice (400 to 700 kg) from the Songhua River. amberjack1234
Good video Randy. I could eat some of that duck the way that he prepares it. Perhaps that is one of his un-noticed attributes. I do love the Beijing roasted duck but I am not to keen on the ducks that they force feed to get them so fat. There is just too much fat for me.
