Major Snow -- the beginning of heavy snowfalls

Traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides a year into 24 solar terms. Major Snow (Chinese, 大雪), the 21st solar term of the year, begins this year on Dec. 7 and ends on Dec. 20.

During such period, the snow in northern China becomes heavy and begins to accumulate on the ground. The temperature drops significantly.

The 24 solar terms, based on the sun's position in the zodiac, were created by farmers in ancient China to guide agricultural affairs and farming activities. They reflect the changes in climate, natural phenomena, agricultural production, and people’s daily life, including clothing, food, housing, and transportation. Playing important roles and greatly influencing people's basic needs, they still work well nowadays.

Recently, China's 24 solar terms, considered to be the country's fifth great invention, were added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage

Yelang was an ancient political entity first described in the 3rd century BC centered in what is now western Guizhou province, China. Experts believe that many ancient cultures were rooted here, but there are unfortunately no architectural remnants left standing in the great valley. Inspired by Crazy Horse, a mountain monument dedicated to a Native American warrior, in the US state of South Dakota, after visiting the United States, Chinese artist Song Peilun dedicated his life to building a memorial to the artistic heritage of Yelang Valley and restoring part of its former glory.

Create sweet memories with #sugarpainting

Have you ever tasted or perhaps heard of #sugar painting?

As less people choose to make this kind of painting, the traditional Chinese folk craft might have become a distant memory in some ways.

However, a 38-year old craftsman, Li Jianzhong, is committed to keeping the art of sweet painting alive.

From Mugou village in Gaoping city in #Shanxi province, Li worked as a miner for more than ten years. After the mine closed down, Li turned to interior decorating, until he was forced to give that up due to a finger injury.

Earlier this year, he discovered sugar painting, something he really had an interest in and a strong desire to learn.

Since there was no sugar painting craftsman in his village, he studied by himself through videos and information on the internet. He soon mastered the skill and can make various kinds of sugar arts.

Sugar painting is ususally made with melted brown or white sugar. Craftsman often paint animals and flowers on a stone board with the syrup. When the sugar cools down, a piece of sugar art is finished.

"The most important thing is brewing sugar. If the temperature is too high, the sugar color will darken and won't be that transparent and beautiful," Li said.

Li said he loved painting when he was young, and he found it easy to learn the artistry of sugar painting.

#China to build yet ANOTHER terrifying sky-high glass bridge in the 'Avatar' mountains - and this time it's 'invisible'

 

Thrill seekers rejoice - China is building yet another terrifying glass-bottomed bridge in its 'Avatar' mountains.

 

It was only in August that the Chinese unveiled the world's longest and highest glass bridge in the mountain range that inspired the film Avatar, in the Hunan province, but now architects have gone one further.

They've designed an 'invisible' bridge that's spectacular and scary in equal measure.

The incredible structure is designed to blend in with the landscape of the mountains of Zhangjiajie.

The transparent footbridge, suspended high between two mountain-tops, will cost over £4million to build and has been created by Martin Duplantier Architectes (MDA) and Daqian Landscape Architects, who won a design competition.

It will be built using mirrored stainless steel and the floor will be made of black stone that becomes reflective when wet, according to Designboom.com.

The idea is that the structure mirrors the environment and gives the optical illusion of blending into thin air -definitely making it unsuitable for those scared of heights.

The bridge will be made up of two layers, however, so there are some options for nervous visitors.

The upper level that connects the two rock faces is in the shape of an elliptical disk and doesn't have a see-through floor.

A winding black stone path leads intrepid explorers from one peak to the other.

Surrounding the path is a layer of water two centimetres thick, which is sprayed onto it every seven minutes by nozzles creating a temporary cloud and mist between the mountains.

The lower level is where things start to get seriously scary however.

The floor is 100 per cent glass, allowing brave visitors to gaze at the void below.

Today (21st of December) is the Winter Solstice Festival(冬至) of China,it is one of the important festivals for the Chinese people. In the Northern part,people like to eat dumpling soup,but in the Southern part, people like to Tangyuan to celebrate the Festival. Both dumpling and Tangyuan are symbolic of reunion.

Magnificent: Construction of the longest bridge linking China’s Sichuan and #Tibet progresses with drone deployed to set up its first cable

Photos taken on December 20 show a drone mounted with cable flying over the Dadu River in southwest China’s Sichuan province to set up the first cable for the bridge under construction across the river. The drone was seen flying from atop the bridge, which is 188-meter-tall. After it set up the first cable across the valley it was also seen flying back.

Yeah, I told a story on the CFV about coming home from a visit to the VA hospital late one evening and seeing something in the front yard that looked like a hubcap. Went to investigate and it was one of the damn thing camera and all. No one ever came looking for it.

Another off topic story but interesting to me at least. While on another VA visit in Wilmington I up and out of my side window and saw something flying through the air and could not immediately recognize so I watched it a few seconds. It was one of those darn thrill seekers with the webbed suits on like a flying squirrel sailing around and headed towards the air port.

To promote winter tourism and ignite its sluggish economy, the provincial government has made decision to open an “Ice/Snow Day” on December 20. State-owned winter sports facilities will be open for free on this day.

The province’s brutal winter, which lasts about 120 days, was once an obstacle impeding local economic development. However, Heilongjiang has taken measures to transform the cold, snowy season into a resource to boost its economy, which has slowed in recent years amid the country’s economic restructuring.

Why Visit Jinkeng

Jinkeng Red Yao Terraced Fields is farther than the other two terraced field areas from the tourist entrance. A less-visited tourist area, Jinkeng (金坑 'Golden Hollow') is less touristy and the scenery is more spectacular than the Zhuang areas. It attracts lots of photographers every year.

Dazhai Village

The Jinkeng Red Yao Terraced Fields include Dazhai Village, Xiaozhai Village, Tiantou Village, Xinzhai Village, Zhuangjie Village, and Xiabu Village. Dazhai Village is the main tourist center with many hotels and guesthouses located nearby.
