Need some info regarding (Air) Canada

Recommended Posts

Wife is going to China for a week and returning with the inlaws as well, all on same plane(s).Airline is Air Canada, for her going as well as them (wife and her parents) coming back.I've heard that in Canadian airports that as far as cash goes (vending machines, luggage carts, etc.) that only Canadian currency is accepted.Any truth to that?

Also would like to know what customs forms are requirted and if the required customs forms they will need to fill out prior to arrival here (and in Canada if applicable) are available for download so I can show wife what she needs to write (in) as well as the parents.

BTW.,all will be coming to US./PHL.

Green-card holder will have no issue transiting Canada, Persons with a valid visa to the USA also can transit Canada provided that they depart from certain airports in China, and transit at specific airports in Canada.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/twov/index.asp

Also, note Canada IS the Pre-clearance POE for travel to the USA, when transiting Canada, travelers will need to clear American customs in the Canadian airport before boarding the plane into the USA.

As for customs forms, they tend to provide on the plane.

Sample I-94 http://forms.cbp.gov/pdf/arrival.pdf (Can print out and fill it out, so that traveler understands how to fill out the real form) Only for visitors, not filled out by green-card, US Citizens, or persons traveling on an immigrant visa such as IR-1, CR-1, or IR-5

Canadians tend to accept US Dollars or Canadian dollars interchangeably especially in places where US travelers are present like in airports, however there should be a currency exchange in the airport where can acquire a few canadian dollars for use in the airport, probably will get a better exchange rate than if trying to use US $$ directly with venders. As for machines they will only accept Canadian coin, (Loonies, Toonies, etc,) is much like vending machines here in the states will reject Canadian coins and bills.

A friend of mine here in Portland sent his wife to China before she got her green card but had advanced parole. Coming back she had a stop in Vancouver BC before going on to Portland. The airline in Hong Kong wouldn't let her board because she didn't have a transit visa. As a green card holder she won't have any problem but her parents may need a transit visa for Canada. Check with the airline to make sure.

Carl per Canada customs site linked above starting last year Canada now allows TWOV from China if they hold a valid visa to USA.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/twov/index.asp

I can understand having issues if only traveling with AP doc, that is not mentioned by Canada and AP is not a visa or green card.

A few more details on this: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/ctp/eligibility.asp

Air Canada qualifies for this, however transit without visa is offered in only two airports, Vancouver and Toronto, need to be holding a ticket for flight to USA, flight needs to arrive at times when the USA preclearance is open at the airport.

If they wish to visit Canada such as see Toronto or Vancouver, then a Canada visit visa will be needed before flight, exception would be a green card holder.

All of those things I would have in my carry on.

silver bars and currency... might raise an eyebrow at security in a carry-on

Not really, simply claim them as personal on the customs form.
