heyjimi
My computer laptop died this weekend,so i went out and bought a new one.So the wife was saying she would like to have a new one.....you know "hint,hint"......i find computers are cheaper here in USA,but the problem is she of course wants the chinese software,my thought was buy a computer here, bring to china, have the chinese software installed in China. does this sound feasible?also she uses a device that she can write with a pen,as opposed to typing. do they have these devices in america?thanks. Jimi For the pen - yes, the standard XP installation will recognize Chinese handwriting if you install both the Japanese and Chinese IME's and a graphics tablet, such as Wacom. If she wants a larger area for input, there's the Twinbridge software - http://www.twinbridge.com/
george lee
you can buy the laptop and install vista ultimate edition and have multiple languages. user can switch between english and chinese of their choices. i would go back to hong kong or china to buy the pen input because it has more choices. they can install software for you on the spot. I agree, why buy a computer in China if you are here?.... it is my impression that your wife is here in the USA. If it breaks, you then have to send it back to China if purchased there? Think about the last time you had to install American software, all the options you have and now compound that by not understanding the language. Maybe your wife can install it but unless you really understand what you are doing I think you will have BIG problems. I work with computers and when Lisa was here she changed my windows explorer to Chinese. Even though I sort of know what's on each menu, I had GREAT DIFFICULTY browsing the web. If I tried to install Chinese language software I would be totally lost. I would buy the computer here and send it or take it there with you.One note about lap tops - find out what she is looking for BEFORE you buy the computer. If she wants a nice light weight netbook that is inexpensive and has good battery life it will be great for web browsing but it WILL NOT run Vista. Not that that is a big deal for me but someone here posted about being able to easily switch languages. My advice - wait until August. Sounds like her computer works fine now and in August (just before the kids go back to school in the fall) is the best time to get a great deal on a computer. In the mean time she can try your lap top and see if its something she really wants. If she is used to a desk top she may decide a laptop is not for her. I have a 3 year old lap top and I can't WAIT (but I will wait until August to get a great deal ---hahaha) to go back to a desktop because of the speed, clearer monitor, etc My 2 rmb for whatever that's worth John

Jimi Yes - 1's and 0's are a universal language - Only the displayed text changes, and that comes from the operating system (if your installing a Chinese OS), or whatever webpage or software she uses. Guest shutterbug
I would prefer to purchase the laptop in the US, whether it will be used in the US or China. Even though they are all made by OEM's in China anyways, no matter which brand you get (HP, Dell, or Apple), the price is usually lower, often considerably lower if you get a good deal. Prior to the late 1990s, you had to install Windows for a particular locale in order to have native support for local languages, otherwise you need third-party software. When Windows NT 4.0 was released in 1996, it had Unicode support in mind; later on Microsoft released add-ons to display Chinese characters as well as to input Chinese characters in Internet Explorer and a few Microsoft Office applications, in the English version of Windows NT 4.0. But most applications were not Unicode-aware back then. That support has been improved and included in Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. Based on my experience on Windows XP, I can say that virtually any Unicode-aware Chinese software should function properly on the English version of XP; and those that are not written with Unicode in mind will usually work, if you tweak the Regional and Language settings in Control Panel: since I don't have an XP box in front of me, I can't tell you the exact steps, but here is what you do on Vista - in Control Panel, open Regional and Language Options, go to the Administrative tab, click Change System Locale, select Chinese (Simplified PRC). Confirm the changes and let the machine reboot when prompted. What this change does is that when Windows cannot determine the encoding of text, it defaults to Chinese in "simplified characters". Many applications are multilingual these days, for example, Skype and MSN Live Messenger. If you choose to use Chinese during the installation, all menus and dialog boxes will be displayed in Chinese, regardless of the operating systems locale setting.
