Guest ShaQuaNew
me . See ShaQuaNew's comments in RED italic: 1. bad food Most of the food in grocery stores is of good quality. You might have to look around for a restaurant you like though... 2. no fun in street at night That's for sure. People just don't go into the streets at night to have fun. Might be because it's not as safe to be there as it once was. I enjoy mingling with the people in the neighborhood on the streets of China. Now that the weather is getting warmer here, everyone comes out at night with their families and children. 3. work obssessed Totally agree. There is a cultural obsession with work in America. Family took second seat over work quite a long time ago.4. think credit is ok You mean credit, like credit cards and loans? Yikes. Doesn't seem like such a good idea anymore. Better to pay cash.5. few holidays Another echo with a big that's for sure. Many US companies have whittled their holiday schedules down to seven-days per year or less.6. no time off at holidays !! unless work for govt US government workers never work, unless they are on holiday anyway... 7. too soft on children The US government has intervened into the personal lives of families to the point that disciplining a child is a criminal act. As a result, we have a generation of kids who believe that society owes them a living and will take care of them. Good luck... 8. taxes, why ? Agreed. See FairTax.orglike my husband My wife.... our house Our apartment The people Things to do Places to go Cheap travel All the holidays... The hard work ethic... like to hear from Chinese too, please As for your question about how long it takes to relax, I think you might have to step back and spend a little less time comparing the differences between the US and China. Everyone goes through that when they move to a new country, but you really need to learn to accept the things you cannot change, and change the things you can. 2mike&jin
me . 1. bad food Great food at home, My Jin makes the best Chinese, and "Home Food" in the world. Since we live in Hawaii that is almost 70% Asian, we mostly have great food, with lots of variety. But you have great Mexican Food in Taos! 2. no fun in street at night "We live in Hawaii. We have an active downtown/Wakiki - until about 4 AM, but just like in China - Shanghai, Xiamen, etc rock 24 hrs a day....the villages in the Chinese countryside do NOT. Taos is one of my most favorite ski places - but it is definitely "in the country" -- therefore NO STREET LIFE". Again, where you live affects your mileage! 3. work obssessed - TOO TRUE. 4. think credit is ok - For most, TOO TRUE.. 5. few holidays - Hawaii, has US Holidays, Chinese, Japanese, Phillippino, Korea, Vietnamese, and Hawaiian Holidays. Again, just in the "wrong part of the US". We definitely have the spirit of Aloha..just don't get in a hurry to get something done, especially at a Government Office. 6. no time off at holidays !! unless work for govt -- "Depends on Job" 7. too soft on children - "BOY ARE YOU CORRECT ON THIS ONE! 8. taxes, why ? China has a higher income tax rate than the US, has significant taxes on imports, they are just usually taken at the source - and you don't have a reconcilliation every year that brings it all into focus. Because of Taxes...Mercedes in US S550 - $110K USD , Mercedes in China, S550 - $2.45M RMB - thats some amount of taxes! Sales tax on new house in China 3%, sales tax on new house in US = 0. But yes overall - taxes amount to more in the US on the average person, when you figure in SS, SDI, and the other hidden taxes on gas, alcohol, cig, etc. Lucky we don't live in Europe they are way over the top. We are headed there - we just need one more stupid thing like "Free Medical for everyone" -- and we'll be just like Europe! My Jin thinks your list is pretty much on "Target", the comments were mine, based on location mostly! Good Topic. like my husband our house like to hear from Chinese too, please Edited April 17, 2009 by 2mike&jin (see edit history) Link to comment

Last year, I posted my ten likes and ten dislikes about America, and that started a furious " War"... one American woman called my names, which made me feel so bad and that was when I quit posting for a while. Jin, I understand exactly how you feel. I have a decent job back in China, good salary.... Nothing can never match that in America, I know it, which makes me feel disappointed... I am trying to think more good things about America, like this recession, we can take it both as a chanllenge and a chance, right? Link to comment
