Polution in China

Recommended Posts

With all of the cheep goods and the money that we save from the cheap goods that we get from China not to mention the fact that we are saving our environment by having almost everything imported from China.

Should there be a tax placed on all products exiting China destin for America to help them pay for cleaning up their environment? After all the American companies that have moved to China did so because of two factors.

1. To avoid the high cost of EPA standards related to production.

2. Cheap labor to produce the products.

Then either the companies that moved there should pay to clean it up or if our taxpayers pay for the cleanup, then the Chinese should reimburse us for the lost jobs in the US.

The American (and others) companies wouldn't be there if they and their money wasn't welcomed. When/if the Chinese government forces companies to clean up the damage their pollutants have caused, they will just shutdown and move to another country with open arms..

Capitalism..use and abuse...shareholders come first...everyone/everything else be damned

No..I think we'll just stick to the way things are...

Good reply. The reason that I started this is that this issue is now being kicked around. So I have been reading in some Chinese news reports.

If China decides to tax items manufactured in China to help clean up the environment so be it, they will probably be more fair about it than most countries. The added cost to goods imported in the US would probably be minimal.

If they taxed the companies the down side would be that most contracts only pay a fixed amount for the goods and the labor force would end up eating the cost instead of including expense to the end user.

First, they'd have to tax exports destined for every country, not just the USA.

Second, that would raise the cost of products made in China. With exports down over 30%+ and the government offering subsidies to exporters so that even more of them don't go belly up, raising the prices would have an even worse effect on their economy.

Don't believe everything you read in the Chinese newspapers.

China won't do anything that will raise the price. They are more worrried about keeping their own people working.

Bottom line is that pollution fixes right now are secondary.... Fixing the Economy is more important and until that is well in hand pollution problems will have to wait as far as most will be concerned.....

Your right Lee ... but the labor force always eats the cost in cost reduction situations ...

the best consulating job in the world is the one where you advise people on how to streamline operations and reduce cost. You take the target amount of savings and divide by avg. cost of a working employee (not anyone above middle management). Then recommend how many employees to be cut contained in a nicely bounded package of 150-200 pages of which only the one calculation was of any importance. Leave it to the remaining workers to figure out the actual part of "doing more with less".

If they complain explain to them there a billion chinese waiting to take their job if they don't like it.
