plus its the only one that works with vista

Right, the older versions of KingSoft PowerWord are not compatible with WinVista. It appears to be very popular here in China. I notice that nearly all of our Engineers have it running in the background during the day. It makes it easy, as it enables the user to point at any word displayed on the computer screen, and receive and instant translation.

it has 3 windows you work out of...

my suggestion is to have a native chinese speaker looking over your shoulder when you install it

Thanks, I'm checking for the free version. I thought there was a trial also, but I can't find it for the English version.

A couple of things I am looking for.

1. I am looking for something where I can type pinyin and get Hanzi. Is this the correct software for that ?

2. I want to paste up to whole paragraphs of Simplified Chinese and see the English translation.

Thanks for your help.

I downloaded the software. It seems to work fairly good for English to Chinese translation. My wife needs this for going to school (massage therapy) and the medical terminology is has very helpful. I have heard of programs that let you convert from English to Chinese by simply moving your mouse over a word. Does anyone know where to get this kind of program?

This has chinese to english, so I assume it would also convert from english to chinese. I haven't used it in a few years, but before you could download a free trial version. I'm also not sure whether it would have the medical terminology your wife would be interested in, but it's worth a try.

If you have XP, you can set up your computer (in control panel) to be able to type pinyin and get hanzi.

To get a mechanical translation of simplified or traditional chinese, try google translator. http://www.google.com/language_tools

If you want to improve your chinese (and have a more nuanced idea of what the chinese person is saying), don't use a translator. Look up words you don't know on http://www.mandarintools.com/ (click C/E dictionary in the left sidebar), write newly learned words down on a piece of paper, and look at them and repeat them a few times a day for a few days before throwing the paper away. It will be daunting at first for those who don't already know some chinese, but it will be worth it once you can express yourself freely in her language...
