Beijing Olympics and the trip to the moon

Recommended Posts

China has spend about 40 billion USD to prepare for the Olympics !

US spent about 36 billion to go to the moon !

Besides going to the moon, US had tremendous scientific and technological achievements in the process of carrying out that task. Electronics and computer technology, rocket science, aviation, communications, etc. etc. progressed beyond belief, because of our landing on the moon!

China achieved or hope to achieve significant progress in transportation, architecture, communications, regional and national security, pollution control, envirnmental protection, better infra-structure, and most of all good will around the world, etc. by these Olympic games.

Two days ago they reported that Beijing saw a blue sky for the first time in many years !

We wish China the best ! !

I was in Beijing for about two and a half weeks in May this year, there were many days that the sky was not clear, but also some days of clear blue skies.

Is that expressed in equivalent USD or did we spend 36 billion 1960's dollars while they spent 40 billion 2008 dollars?

If it isn't, 36 billion 1969 dollars (I know a lot spent before '69 so this underestimates) would be about 200 billion 2007 dollars (last year for which data is available)

Yeah, that's what I was going to ask... what about inflation?

Yea, I edited to give an idea of the difference but the number is actually 200 billion to 300 billion depending on what indicator you use.

That's a big spread there but it's only a matter of whether $1 fropm 1969 is worth about $5.50 to $8 2008 USD

A very interesting comparison...China is able to fork out these kinds of yuan because they are so fiscally responsible compared to another country I could name...
Yes, and let's remember that the 32 Billion US spent on the moon was with very non-inflated dollars. But no worry we financed it. China's 40 billion is a deal and they're paying cash.

Also this is one of the few if not the onlyl Oympics that a sitting US President has attended.

Keep in mind that was 36B in 1960's dollars, so in todays dollars that would be in the neighborhood of $360 Billion.

But going the other way, 4 billion would be a huge amount for the USA to spend on an Olympics if held in the 60's

Figuring that the dollar was 1/10 today's value in the 60's

Some of you raised the concern about the inflation during the last 30-40 years. Let us say that it is about 5-10 times depending upon what criteria you use. That would make the 36 billion to about 200-400 billion.

If we want to be strict about it, we also will have to consider the value of one billion US dollars in the US and 1 billion US dollars in China. Actually $1.00 in the US is worthless. But it is very valuable in China. Let us say NASA hired engineers paying about $100,000/year (including health insurance, vacation pay, sick pay, pension etc). In China, engineers of similar qualifications are hired at $10,000/year. A factory worker or a construction worker in the US is paid about $50,000 per year. In China, similar workers are paid about $3,000/year. Let us say that we did exactly the same thing that China did in Beijing for the Olympics, we would be spending not just 40 billion, but something like 400 -500 billion. To get the exact numbers, however, we will have to hire about a dozen CPA's and work for a year.

Well I hope that Chinese do eventually have a successful and uneventful trip to and from the moon There would be flags from the newest people (USA) and from the most ancient people (China). Seems fitting.

We should just work together and build some crazy moon base. We can use the money from our government's lock box to build it, and then we can make some missile bases to aim at Russia, Iran, and all those other hard to deal with governments. Think of it... a American/Chinese moon. I mean... kinda like...
