This is so sad to hear. However, I am glad to see that they are taking precautions and evacuating people. Hopefully they will be able to prevent more casualties. Still praying for all of the victims and volunteers.

More than 1 million people may have to evacuate dozens of villages in a Sichuan province valley if an earthquake-spawned lake threatens to burst and flood the region. The misery and chaos continues for the poor people of China.

I believe in this case they want the earthquake formed dam to fail in a controlled manner. Interestingly though, the earthquake may have just formed a new natural lake and the earthquake dam is HUGE so it might actually hold.

 

It would be interesting to hear what the engineers say about the security of the earthquake dam.

The difference being, though, the the valleys of the New Madrid earthquake were formed by the quake and filled by the water.

 

The Chinese situation is a dam of unknown stability created by the earthquake, forming a lake 1000's of feet above the valleys where people live.

 

For an example of what can happen when the dam breaks - Estes Park in 1982

 

Of course, if the dam holds, the river will just fill up the lake and flow over the top just like it used to.

As of Saturday morning 200,000 people had been evacuated from Mianyang and another 1 million may have to be evacuated...

We watched a segment from Hunan News the other night in which they visited children who had been injured in the Sichuan Earthquake and were in the hospital now. Can you imagine what it would have been like for kids to be sitting their in their classroom and suddenly have the whole building collapse around you...Many of your classmates and teachers dead, badly injured or trapped in the rubble...These kids all had the "deer in the headlights" stare...Vacant, fearful, their worlds torn apart in an instant...5.12 is a day they will never forget...
