Shooting erupts along Korean DMZ

 

Incident occurs amid signs of hope for talks on nuclear crisis

SEOUL, South Korea, July 17 ¡ª South Korean soldiers exchanged machine gun fire with North Korean troops on Thursday in the Demilitarized Zone, the divided peninsula¡¯s heavily fortified frontier, the South¡¯s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. The firefight erupted against a backdrop of high tension over Pyongyang¡¯s apparent pursuit of nuclear weapons but amid reports that talks seeking a peaceful solution might restart.

The two sides have been in tension for long, it seems the firefight would absolutely be happening. But the firefight may not end the nucear weapons, and hope it wont lead to bigger fights.

U.S. military is now indicating that it may have been an accidental firing. The North only fired four rounds, three of which hit the South's guardpost and the South issued a verbal warning over the loudspeakers and then fired a 17 round burst back. The press made it sound worse than it was.

 

Still a matter of concern for us since we will be living very close to the North Korean border and will fly through Seoul on the way back.
