If you bought a diamond or a piece of diamond jewelry between 1994 and March 2006, you could be eligible for a share of a $295 million class action lawsuit settlement with South Africa's De Beers Group, the world's largest diamond producer .

 

 

Consumers, who were automatically included in the lawsuit class, can apply for a claim ranging from 6 percent to 59 percent of the retail cost of the diamond purchase. The amount of claims actually paid, however, will depend on how many people apply by the May 19 deadline.

Good news for all you guys who haven't bought your gal a diamond yet. Now maybe all you'll need is two or three weeks salary instead of two to three months.

 

Great catch Randy. I didn't see this anywhere. I'm amazed that someone was finally able to hold DeBeers accountable financially for their decades of dishonesty.

 

I love how they say in the article that "although we don't agree...it's in the companies best interest etc." If they really thought they had a defenseable case, and with all their money, they would have tied this up in court for years. They've been caught red-handed somewhere. I hope all the details come out.

I'm sure this is about as much of it as you will see. DeBeers most likely made a deal to gag order any of the detail for the payout settlement. With the size of their company this is more than likely not going to hurt them that much. If you think about it DeBeers has the corner on the Diamond market.

The percentages range from 6%-14.5% for Mixed stones jewelry, 10.5%-45% for diamonds-only jewelry, or 59% for loose diamonds.

 

A $135 million fund as been set aside for those who bother to file a claim.

 

The higher percentages apply if fewer people file a claim.

Hmm... it says "A U.S. purchase is any purchase where the Diamond Product was delivered to you in the U.S. and includes purchases made from establishments in the U.S., as well as purchases from establishments abroad that were delivered to you in the U.S."

 

So if you bought the diamond abroad but then took it to the US .... not sure if that qualifies ... but you can file anyway and try ...
