Where was/is your favorite place in China?

Recommended Posts

The Yangshou thread got me to thinking. What places in China that I visited made the biggest impression on me? And, out of all the places I visited, what or where do I yearn to see again?

Although, I am not the world nor China traveler that many of you are. And, I have only visited China three times. Still, there was one place that really stuck in my psyche - Yangshou.

I have only been there once. It was a January. It didn't have the throngs of people that other Chinese cities had. The ambiance was one of old China. Yes, old China. Meaning you could sense that you could still see what others saw hundreds, maybe thousands even, years before... It had the feel of just...

gosh, I don't know...

I just have this draw to return...it's a feeling that I cannot put into words...sigh.. :roller:

Yangshou was also the most romantic place I have ever been. It will also remain a bitter/sweet memory too, as it was where my former NN woman and I 'honeymooned'...

Just as when I was a young sailor who knew when leaving HK for the last time that someday I would return, Yangshou is now one of those places. And, being that Leiqin is a NN woman, I hope to someday return to this place with her.

What is your most memorable place in China that you yearn to return to?

Like you Dennis, I've been to China three times, but it was my last trip there that was the most impacting. Lan is close friends with a travel agent in Shenzhen, through whom she booked a one week trip to Guizhou, China. Here's a link for more information.

We took literally hundreds of pictures, and thanks to our digital partner ended up with more than one thousand total. The mountains, country, people, spoke loudly of ancient culture, with many towns never having ever seen a face other than Chinese. The scenery was out of this world, with tall mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and canyons; it was like a fairy book tale.

The towns people were so excited about our arrival they greeted our airplane at the airport, and escorted us to a parade and party in honor of the group arrival. Each day we visited a new place, and all ate together sharing the local food.

Lan's dream that I hope to make come true one day is to visit what she calls "The Secret Garden." It's located in Tibet.

Before our last trip to China I might have also picked Yangshuo...But last year we went to Yunnan and after buying our house in Yuxi we traveled to...Lijiang... And Lijiang is far and away the best place I have seen in China...The Naxi people...cobblestone streets...water flowing down the side of every street...the eternally snow-capped mountain just behind town...men walking around with falcons on their arms...Lulu Lake...Tiger-Leaping Gorge...4,000 tea shops... :nonono: Here is a pretty good sampling of Lijiang pics...

I am terrible, I will admit.

I love our home in Suzhou the best.

Every time I got to China to visit my wife we travel on tourism.

We visit old cities, and big cities.

I know there are many many places yet to see.

Always though, I love our Suzhou.

It is not busy like Shanghai, but has a good number of people.

It is larger than some of the "old" towns we visit, but a comfortable size for me.

I will write down, and try to visit Guizhou and Yangshou, but I think I am Souzhou-ese in my heart.

I tell you, in Suzhou you can visit the 1000 year old garden homes.

In the same day you can travel to a business park.

You can boat down an old river lined with ancient homes, then take a fast train into Shanghai for business or shopping.

I can walk to the food market with farmers selling their goods, and then bike a short ways to the supermarket with any convenience I want.

Suzhou has weather very much like Austin TX. but is more beautiful.

I am a "home boy" I guess.

My love is in Suzhou.

My heart is in Suzhou.

My life is in Suzhou.

So why am I in America ?!?

If there is one city I would love to move to in my life it would be Shenzhen.

It is in the Guangdong province next to Hong Kong.

All the modern parts of American life with the beauty of China.

The temples on the side of Qincheng Shan in Sichuan is my favorite so far. I think once I visit Lijiang that will be my favorite.

We climbed Qingcheng Shan this past New Years and it was a great time. Many people were there for the holidays, but it was very nice. As you climb so many temples and places to look out from the mountains. We did cheat and take the chair lift down, but i figured it is the climb that is important. They would ring the big bells everytime you donated money at the temples and i love the sound of those old large bells. Plus, the smoke and smells as you walk thru each of the temples. Very good place. Not too far from Chengdu, so easy to get to and from.

I have to agree with Rog with Lijiang being the most memorable areas of China I've experienced.

On our last trip we spent 2 days in the ancient town of Fenghuang in Hunan Province. Although I can't rate it as my fave like Lijiang we agreed we must come back again for a full week there was so much to see there and nearby. It is not easy to get to requiring first train travel and finally bus but it is well worth your time... :)

I've been to Hong Kong (a favorite since I visited as a sailor in 1971), Shenzhen, Guangzhou (yuck), and Beijing. Most of the time I am in the Guilin area. Yangshuo is always on my list as are the Dragon Backbone Rice terraces.

I'll be going in November for 5 weeks, Xiaoying is already there. I plan on spending at least one night at the terraces in Ping 'An or Dazhai, too bad the color will be gone.....best time to visit is April or September. We'll travel to Nanning, on to Beihai, a day trip to Weizhou Dao and spend a week in Hong Kong or Bangkok.

Lijiang and Dali are on my list for a future trip but I'm waiting on Rogie to move in first and setup housekeeping.

The train ride to Tibet would be full of great scenery, unfortuately altitude sickness cancels that, unless I could take a weeks worth of oxygen tanks with me.
