SSN invalid

we received her SSN last week with her maiden name....

i dont know how this happened, but more disappointing was when i went to sign her up with my bank account to get a debit card, the bank told her social security number was invalid.

 

what do you think i should do...

call the local field office?

I find that hard to believe the SSA issuing an invalid number. Why not try a different branch office of your bank. Perhaps they got confused by the work authorization disclaimer on the card.

Maybe it's not in the computer yet. They are not supposed to be requiring an SS number for a bank account, anyway.

first off i have had this account for the last 10 or so years..

all i wanted to was to give her a debit card from it.

 

add her name to accounts that are already opened.

 

she typed in her SSN and it came up invalid she turned the monitor so i could see it and thats what it said....

 

invalid

 

i really really dont wanna have to wait in line over at that field office again for a mistake they made.

Chun will have to call because they wont even give me the time of day if not talking to the card holder...

i already went through that once before.

 

Randy i think that might be an issue...

she did just receive it last week.

Wish you guys the best in resolving this Bill. I've been with my credit union for over 25 years, but would change in an instant if I felt that a staff member were treating me or a family member improperly by getting stiff in the spine when trying to open an account. My credit union does not require an SSN for a bank account, but does ask if you have one. Also, since when are banks tied into the SSN database? I don't think what that teller was showing you was a live link to the SSN office. In any event, you surely presented them with a copy of her card with the number printed on it, accompanied by her name. You might try asking to speak to a supervisor or an advanced level supervisor to explain your situation. I'm sure when you carefully explain your situation, showing passport, marriage certificate, SSN paperwork etc., the little objection raised by the teller will be resolved. Hope it works out for you. well the girl was very friendly and was only doing her job. i suppose BoA and AM SOUTH and GW all ask for SSN now.

being an IT specialist i always am very interested and carefully watch what proprietary

software places like that use...

it just would not allow her to move forward from the time it said incorrect Social Security Number.

That's my point. Because the SSN office created the number, it's their system you should use to validate whether the number is correct or not. I highly doubt that the SSN office has issued her an invalid number. More likely, the bank is doing something invalid on their end, and furthermore, it's their job to know that. But, just my thoughts. Good luck...

I did a little looking on the SSA website and found a few interesting things about the numbers, the SSA publishes a High group list, and I suspect the bank is using an older highgroup.txt file in their software and your new card is outside the list of valid numbers.

My personal one starts 062- and the second group is less than what is on the list so is valid, in my case if a handed a card lets say is 062-97-XXXX looking at the High Group List chart it would be declared invalid.

What's important to understand here is that any institution other than the SSA office itself, is neither authorized, or able to make a determination as to the authenticity of a Social Security Number. Yes, another facility may have a list, but those lists are generated by the SSA.

 

If you want to VALIDATE; and I use that term in the truest sense of making a determination as to whether a line of code works like it's supposed to, or any other device for that matter; then, you need to use the agency that issued the number, in this case, the SSA. This comes from someone whose job it is to make sure IT professionals, software engineers, physicists, engineers, test personnel, do their jobs according to requirements for oh gosh, a whole lotta years.... :D

 

Now, the bank may have a policy that any number not appearing on their list is invalid. That's another issue.
