The numbers are tone markings.

1= high tone

2= rising tone

3= low tone

4= falling tone

 

I'm too inebriated at the moment to remember how to teach those.

But if you can pronounce the pinyin, you are are 80% there.

Thanks..Realy am trying learn this..Felt so dumb when we went to stay with wifes family, treated me like some kinda king and couldnt say a word..Why i didnt ask her to translate for me i dont know..Was brain dead at moment, that was a real honor for me be welcomed in thier home as a family member.
