My teacher is right,he ever said poetry cannot be translated, if try then it will change, loose or add something.If your So can understand a littel english, you'd better tell her in English. Don't consider yourself dumb, recognize your bravery. The numbers are tone markings.1= high tone2= rising tone3= low tone4= falling tone I'm too inebriated at the moment to remember how to teach those.But if you can pronounce the pinyin, you are are 80% there. I agree with what you translated the last line, and it made the whole poetry rhyme at "AO"It made me puzzled when I read this sentance and I asked my husand,he cannot speak any Chinese, so what he explained to me a littel far from the original meaning. When I ask her to say something in chinese, she will often say to me, "Chinese don't say this"... and she'll refuse to do a transliteration of it since it is 'meaningless' in her words (ie: her language). Sometimes she critiques a movie with chinese subtitles for being too 'literal' and having no meaning in chinese... but that's another discussion.. sometimes, I have to push harder and say, "ok.. if you were to tell me something like this, how would you say it"... then I get that challenged look...
